Whispering Voices
Pretty quick theory here, please feel free to discuss, or tell me i am an idiot for posting it! :-) I have a theory that the whispers occur when someone is time traveling near by. Either they are leaving or arriving at the current time. I have always wondered what the other people who were not experiencing time travel heard or sawwhen they were around it, this is what I have come up with. I figure they have to hear something if the time traveling folks hear a loud noise and a bright light. Thoughts?!
Idiot. I’m totally kidding….I couldn’t resist after reading that line. I think your idea is pretty similar to what a lot of people on this site are thinking.
i think its a strong possibility. we do see desmond looking around when faraday is flashing, perhaps he is looking around for the voices and doesn’t really see the light
Can we draw any conclusions from the scenes we have seen where the Losties are time jumping, beside what ekolocation brings up? In the scenes where Losties from the future were watching Losties from the past, did the latter ones hear any whispers?
On a somewhat related topic, why did Ben tell Rousseau (in episode 12 of season 5) that if she wanted Alex to live, then she should run if she heard whispers?
This is a pretty old theory, it’s been around for a good year at least. I really think the whispering is part of Smokey. He also makes crazy mechanical noises as well.

I hope they explain how Ben knew what the whispers were. Or maybe he is just lying again. I don’t know when the whispers started, but maybe they are related to a second time line from 1977-2007. Due to the fact that the island is a special place where two time lines will eventually merge. Aspects of both time lines will exist on the island at once.
In the episode where Ben conjured Smokey to kill the guys from the ship, he made it very clear that he was not 100% in control of it’s actions. Apparently it can be conjured and pointed in a direction, but it cannot be controlled. Sort of like making sure your dog know’s what stick to get before you throw it. There’s no guarantee he’s going to come back with the same stick, or get distracted by a squirrel, or just come back with nothing.
I’ve had similar feelings about the whispers myself… I think the whispers may be the concsciousness of the island… I don’t know.
Im sure ive read somewhere that the voices are of a certain few people, that we havent met. And that they are observing the characters. Maybe they are in the temple watching what happens on the island.
Maybe the whisper is coming from other viewers of the show? 😉
