Locke Tests
1) When did Alpert first visit Locke? He went to the birth ‘cuz John told him to, but did he test him other times before then?
2) Why wait ’till John was as old as he was to test ‘his things’?
3) Did those things belong to Jacob 1st?
4) John picks vile of sand (stoopid pick for a kid), compass (cool pick for a kid) and knife (over comic book – and haven’t we seen that knife). Not BOOK OF LAWS. What is significance of it?
-Eko references Josiah finding one while cleaning out the Temple (OK, book of law)
-could this be ‘the rules’?
5) Why did Alpert come again while he was older still? Did he do it backwards in timelines so he wouldn’t be remembered?

The Book of Laws is central to the Bahai faith which probably doesn’t have anything to do with Lost but has some pretty cool beliefs. I think he picked the sand because it is from the Island.
I actually thought John did pretty good on the test. Along with the picture on the wall that John drew I never really understood why Richard wouldn’t have thought John special.
Also, there is a Book of Law that Aleister Crowley claims was written by his guardian angel Aiwass.
Guys, Richard obviously wanted John to pick the compass.
In 1954, a bald man walks in Richard’s camp, a man Richard has never met before. This man tells Richard that he is the leader of the others, Jacob has sent him and that he must get off the island. This man also gives Richard a compass.
John Locke gave that compass to Richard in 1954 because in 2007, as instructed by FLocke, Richard gives the compass to a wounded John Locke and says next time you see me I won’t know who you are, but give me this compass.
During the ‘test’ Richard says “which one of these things is yours, which one already belongs to you”
That being the compass because Richard only has possession of it because it was given to him by Locke in 1954.
COULD THE COMPASS BE THE LOOPHOLE? ALSO HOW COOL WOULD IT BE TO SEE THAT SCENE WITH RICHARD AND YOUNG JOHN AND SEEING JOHN CHOOSING THE COMPASS IN SEASON 6? CAN’T WAIT FOLKS – 28 DAYS TO GO!! 🙂
let’s see… i’ll try to answer your questions in order…
1) Locke’s birth was the first time that Richard visited him, then in the foster home, then he tried to during highschool.
2)he had to wait until Locke was old enough to understand the test, and infant wouldn’t have.
3)In a manner of speaking i suppose they could have…
4)the vial of sand is land from the island, thus signifying that the island belongs to Locke, the compass we’ve seen as belonging to Locke, and the Knife did not belong to Locke and no, we haven’t seen that knife anywhere but in that scene.
and as for the book of laws, i think you’re right in that it is “the rules” maybe the rules of the island, or for leading the others…
5) the only times that i can remember Richard seeing Locke off-island were at the birth, and in the foster home, he doesn’t actually see him when Locke is in highschool… and no i don’t think Richard does anything backward in time… I don’t think Richard has ever travelled through time, thus why he is so surprised and confused by Locke and Sawyer, and Faraday when he runs into them all… Lock didn’t remember him, because the first time Richard saw him, he was a newborn. then he saw him as a small child in a foster home… the next time he saw him, was on the island…
On a side note about the compass, remember in season 1, that Locke has it, he brought it to the island originally. He comes across Sayid trying to make a compass from a cork and needle with a bowl of water. and he gives Sayid his compass saying, “I don’t need it anymore.”
Yes Locke did give Sayid his compass, could mean something, probably nothing since in season 1 the writers did not know the show would last this long.
But as for ‘the compass’
After Richard is given instructions by FLocke to go and speak to time flashing bullet wound Locke, he WITHOUT INSTRUCTION, takes a compass out of his pocket and says –
“next time we see eachother, I’m not going to recognize you. You give me this” (Richard takes compass out of his pocket)
Locke says “What is this?”
Richard says “Its a compass”
Locke says “What does it do?”
Richard says “It points north John”
The compass is in a loop because Richard receives it for the first time in 1954 from Locke, and then gives it to a time traveling Locke in 2007.
That is why the compass ALWAYS BELONGED to John, even before he was born!
Sidenote – the compass may be special, otherwise why would it mean shit to Richard in ’54?
