Annoying Des/Pen things

Desmond loves Penny.
He breaks up with her in 1996, but tells her he loves her and won’t call her for EIGHT YEARS.
Then FIVE YEARS LATER he decides he wants her back and his big plan is winning her father’s race!?!
And she gives a cr*p about him!?! And spends the next three years looking for him!?! Even setting up people in Antartica looking for just even blip?
And ‘Not Penny’s Boat’ actually kinda’ IS Penny’s boat since Minkowski says Penny calls it all the time but they’re not supposed to answer it. (So why is she so clueless when talking w/Charlie?)

  1. I think after Desmond had found his constant in 2004, his consciousness merged back to the correct times.

So in 1996, after Desmond had made that phone call, he wouldn’t remember even going to visit Penny.

It’s like a part of his life in 1996 was taken over by future-Des, and that part of his life he wouldn’t remember once Desmond had made that phone call.

Desmond wanting to reconcile with Penny makes complete sense. It took five years because he’d been in prison and so was unable to make contact with Penny.

When he gets out of prison Widmore visits Desmond and tells him to stay away from Penny.

Desmond does so, but is determined to win the race to show Widmore that he is worthy of his daughter.

From Penny’s point of view, Desmond visits her in 1996, and then Desmond goes to prison. Penny writes letters to Desmond but he doesn’t receive any of them because they’re intercepted by Widmore.

So, when Desmond finally leaves prison, Penny tracks him down at the stadium. After that, Desmond goes on his journey and ends up on the island.

In the mean time, Penny is finding it hard to track him down and spends the next 3 years looking for him.

With regards to the freighter: it belonged to Widmore. I don’t remember Minkowski saying Penny called all the time, but if she did, perhaps she didn’t realise who or where she was calling?

  2. So, (n 1996) she’s ‘trying to make a clear break’ from him – then he comes by all crazy and says he won’t call her for eight years, so she writes him every day even though he’s not writing back? And THEN goes spends zillions looking for him?

    Not me, brother.

(BTW: Minkowski specifically knows who Desmond is because Penny calls. Penny kicks him out after quickly saying her phone number and he pounds on the door saying she has to believe him. He flashes to the boat where Sayid says, “I do believe you” – he makes the call and while it’s ringing (2004) he’s walking down Penny’s street (1996) and looks up at her pensively and THEN she answers the phone resetting him back in time.)

  3. “he’s walking down Penny’s street (1996) and looks up at her pensively and THEN she answers the phone resetting him back in time.”

Isn’t that what I said? If not, it’s what I meant.

I guess Penny was curious after Desmond told her to wait 8 years for his call which made her try and contact Desmond for all those years.

She loved him, and I think that’s enough of a reason to pursue him for so long.

  4. Just looked at the transcripts for The Constant.

“MAN: I’m George Minkowski. I’m the communications officer. Before they strapped me down here, all the calls to and from this boat came through me, in the radio room. And every so often, I’d get this flashing light on my console. An incoming call. We were under strict orders never to answer it.

DESMOND: So? What’s that got to do with me?

MINKOWSKI: Those calls came from your girlfriend. Penelope Widmore.”

That suggests to me that Widmore knew Penny was looking for Desmond and he told the people on the freighter never to answer her calls.

The calls may not have been from her personally, but from the 2 men she had on that boat at the end of Season 2. Or perhaps if it was her, she may not have known she was calling a freighter, she may just have thought she was calling someone in connection with Desmond.
