An Alternate to the Alt Timeline Theory (Part one)…
Prepare yourselves, this is going to be a long theory; and as such I’m splitting it into two parts. Basically, I’m first going to line up a lot of the events in chronological time as I understand them. And give a brief explanation of how I think the time travel works. Then in part two, I’m going to give my theory on why an alternate timeline is not necessary, and what I think the writers will do instead.
Before you start reading the timeline, please remember that not all of the dates are definitive, and that some of the events are theory and opinion. Also, I just threw in a bunch of events, some may not be important at all, while i also may have forgotten some big ones… so basically, read the timeline with a grain of salt.
Ancient times:
It would seem that ancient Egyptian culture comes to the island first, possibly this includes Jacob and Nemesis.
1700’s:
(I’m not sure on the century, but whenever the Black Rock showed up) The Black Rock reaches the island; Jacob and Nemesis have their conversation; Locke turns the wheel; Charlotte dies; earthquake, tidal wave, and maybe volcano are all triggered (see my previous theory for more info on this); The well is not built yet, perhaps implying that the temple is not yet built either.
1950’s:
US military finds the island and brings Jughead to it. Richard seems to be leader of the natives (I’ll be using “natives” instead of “others” for now); Locke gives compass to Richard; Dan tells Eloise to bury Jughead; Eloise & Widmore are on island, but not leaders; Locke is born.
1960’s:
The Dharma Initiative begins from the funding of Hanso; Ben is born; Richard tests Locke as a child in the foster home, compass is in the test.
1970’s:
Ben comes to island with Roger; Majority of Losties are born; Jacob touches Sawyer & Kate; ’77 Losties end up in Dharma Initiative; Rose, Bernard, and Vincent live in cabin on the beach; Jack and co. flash off 316 into ’77; ben is shot and taken to the temple; Widmore/Eloise are seemingly the leaders of the natives; Dan tells Charlotte to never come back to the island; Dan dies; Juliet detonates Jughead, which causes the incident; ’77 Losties flash away.
1980’s:
Horace builds the cabin in the woods; Sayid meets Kelvin.
1990’s:
Purge occurs; Yemi’s plane crashes; Rousseau’s team gets to island, and are all killed except for her; Ben takes Alex; Widmore is leader, Eloise is not seen; Desmond meets Penny and is kicked out of monastery; Desmond leaves Penny after Eloise convinces him to; Dan succeeds with rat experiment.
2000-2004:
Juliet comes to the island; Ben is leader of others (I’m using “others” now because I feel many of them are new recruits); Others live in Barracks; Desmond arrives on island, meets Kelvin; Hurley wins lotto; All of the Losties have events in Australia; Desmond doesn’t push button and 815 crashes; Events in seasons 1-3; Freighter shows up; Desmond calls Penny to be his constant (on X-mas eve) Ben turns wheel; Oceanic six leave; Remaining Losties commence time travel.
2005-2008:
Oceanic Six get home and enjoy life/ get miserable; Desmond hides, and has a kid; Ben becomes a vet.
2008-2009:
Locke becomes Bentham; Locke dies; Oceanic Six return; Ajira 316 crash lands; Jack and co. flash back to ’77; Flocke appears; Flocke gets Ben to kill Jacob; Ilana shows Richard Locke’s body; Richard gives compass to Locke.
There, that is the timeline as I understand it. As for a real brief explanation as to how I think the time travel begins, I believe it is something like the Tralfamadorians in Kurt Vonnegut’s SlaughterHouse Five. They can move freely through not only three dimensional space, but through four dimensional space, time is simply something to move through; though in this case the Losties can’t control where they go.
Part 1 is done…
