The Black Rock Mining Expedition
When we saw Locke, Jack, and Kate getting dynamite from the Black Rock in Season 1, Locke noticed the mining equipment on board the ship. We know that mining, in general, has been a science of specific importance when it comes to the island, since there is electromagnetic energy pockets underground. We all know there is a purpose to most things in the world of Lost, so the mining equipment on the Black Rock is no accident.
The Black Rock arrived in the 1800’s, well before DHARMA was ever conceived of. What was the mining equipment for? What naturally exists on the island that is underground? Only two answers come to mind.. the electromagnetic energy itself and.. the Frozen Wheel.. Perhaps, somehow, the Black Rock crew were the ones who dug and built the well that Locke lowers himself down?
im in complete agreement…also remember in s2 , ben tells locke in the hatch that he was mining for “non-metallic” metal…..wierd!!
Lets say they did build it, not much of a revelation. Hate to sound like I’m bashing this. Just don’t see much significance.

When they’reall in the Black Rock getting the dynamite Locke says something about the mining equiptment. Something like it may have been heading to a mining colony off the coast of Africa or something. I can’t remember exactly i’ll have to look it up…but who knows if thats just a red flag that the writers put in to throw us off.

I see your connection with the donkey wheel looking like a boat steerer…thing. What the hell kind of technology did they have in 1850 that could make an island travel through time and space though?
I thought maybe they knew it existed, and that’s why they dug into the island….to find it.
The Black Rock was probably only there to mine the rare magnetic rock the island had. They were sent by a Hanso.

I agree with Locke… The Black Rock was just on a trip to do some mining near Africa and was diverted to the island against their will by Jacob.
The chamber that held the donkey wheel contained hieroglyphics, like in the temple, and are probably connected to the statue as well. i think it was all done by people much earlier then the time of the black rock.
But maybe the blackrock crew somehow found the well and improvised by using the wheel of their ship….
i guess….but the whole ‘who’s to say they didn’t dig it out just to have ancient island inhabitants take over last minute and put their finishing touches on it seems weak doesn’t it??….i dunno. to each their own i guess, but i don’t buy either of those options.
I think i might be with Locke and highbrow on this one. I think Jacob influenced the Black Rock, and its course, and brought it into the path of the island.
here’s hoping it’s one of the questions we actually get an answer too!
Well, what if Jacob moved the island into the path of the Black Rock? That isn’t really different than changing the BRs course at all. The point is that the island wasn’t their intended destination.
I think it’s possible that the BR people dug the well but I’d be interested to know why they decided to dig right there… how did they detect that there was something under the ground right there?
PutMeOn815.. I know it may not be uber-significant, but just an interesting thought that came to mind. The writers went out of their way (albeit just a bit) to show that the Black Rock was carrying mining equipment.
Also just wondering.. completely unrelated.. if the “missing” stone from the (supposedly) crumbled Statue of Tawaret was used to built the Temple/Temple Wall or tunnels?
