A Bit of Lost Determinism & Chaos

I’d like to thank Achalli for inspiring me to explore ‘The Chaos Theory’.

Understanding Determinism and Chaos will help us to determine what is at the core of the ongoing struggle in Lost, and in terms of ‘duality’ and its function in the universe. In addition it will also lend itself to understanding the nature of what has/is occurring between Jacob and Nemesis. It illustrates the basis and foundation of their opposition to one another, the characters, and in general terms how it pertains to the universe.

A deterministic system is a conceptual model of the philosophical doctrine of determinism applied to a system for understanding everything that has and will occur in the system, based on the physical outcomes of causality (cause and effect). In a deterministic system, every action, or cause, produces a reaction, or effect, and every reaction, in turn, becomes the cause of subsequent reactions. The totality of these cascading events can theoretically show exactly how the system will exist at any moment in time.

Behaviourism, is an approach to psychology based on the proposition that behavior can be researched scientifically without recourse to inner mental states, is usually considered to be deterministic and opposed to free will.

The larger the deterministic system, the longer the necessary chain of cause and effect. The entire universe may be considered as such a system, which creates its own philosophical questions.

In mathematics, chaos theory describes the behavior of certain dynamical systems, that is, systems whose states evolve with time that may exhibit dynamics that are highly sensitive to initial conditions (popularly referred to as the butterfly effect). As a result of this sensitivity, which manifests itself as an exponential growth of perturbations in the initial conditions, the behavior of chaotic systems appears to be random. This happens even though these systems are deterministic, meaning that their future dynamics are fully defined by their initial conditions with no random elements involved. This behavior is known as deterministic chaos, or simply chaos.

In esoteric cosmology expansion refers to the emanation or unfolding of steadily denser planes or spheres from the spiritual summit, what Greek mythology described as Chaos, until the lowest and most material world is reached.

According to Rosicrucian’s, another difference is that there is no such thing as empty or void space. The space is Spirit in its attenuated form, while matter is crystallized space or Spirit. Spirit in manifestation is ‘dual’ that which we see as Form is the ‘negative’ manifestation of Spirit crystallized and inert. The positive pole of Spirit manifests as Life, galvanizing the negative Form into action, but both Life and Form originated in Spirit, Space, Chaos. On the other hand, Chaos is not a state, which has existed in the past and has now entirely disappeared. It is all around us at the present moment.

Were it not, that old forms having outlived their usefulness are constantly being resolved back into that Chaos, which is also as constantly giving birth to new forms, there could be ‘no progress’. The work of evolution would cease and stagnation would prevent the possibility of advancement.

Jacob speaks in terms of progress when he addresses Nemesis. When Jacob addresses Ben and Hurley, he suggests to them that they have choice, while Nemesis appears to be convinced that human behaviour is something that is predictable or deterministic. He therefore is implying that the outcome of events is also always predictable, and that change/evolution will not occur. Jacob’s Nemesis appears to be opposed to progress and advancement. Jacob feels that everything that happens in between, up until the end, is indicative of progress. They represent polar opposites, the ‘positive’ and the ‘negative’ energies/influences, if you will. This is the nature of their ‘struggle’…. to control what occurs on ‘the island’.

A quote from the Room 23 video; “we are the causes of our own suffering”. As humans, the struggle is always with ‘the self’. We have certainly witnessed many struggles with the characters throughout the seasons, and we will also learn where their struggles will lead them in Season 6, and as viewers, we are hoping that in the end, they will emerge triumphant in some regard.

Human beings consist of both positive and negative energies/influences, as they evolved from ‘spirit’. The characters in Lost also possess and display both positive and negative energies/influences. Throughout the seasons, we have seen our characters exhibiting one aspect of either positive or negative behaviour, and then observe another aspect or element of their natures. This makes it extremely difficult to get a fixed read on their behaviour and determine if they are good or bad people, as their natures are continuously evolving. Both of these aspects (positive and negative energies/influence) are present and at work within all humans at all times. They are as ever changing and as pervasive as the wind, continually struggling to achieve and maintain balance and order.

Jacob and Nemesis typify these qualities and are reflective of the ‘light and dark’ energies/influences/forces that permanently exist within all of us and are continuously at work in the universe. Each energy/influence/force is essential and completely dependant upon the others existence. We are all part of the ‘universal’ consciousness. I believe where Lost is concerned this fact is being emphasized.

I subscribe to Stephen Hawking’s belief regarding human beings in, that they are made up of energy (both positive and negative), and that this energy can never cease to exist in the universe. Hawking states, because energy cannot die, energy can only logically be transformed into another source of energy, which continues to exist in other ‘form’ in the universe. I personally refer to this as the ‘human spirit or soul’. Positive energy (light energy) resonates on higher planes, while Negative energy (dark energy) resonates in the denser planes in the universe.

Therefore, this never-ending cycle of Deterministic Chaos continues, beginning with birth, death and re-birth as its only resolve, progressing and evolving to maintain the natural order and balance of the universe. They are two sides of the same coin, one light, and one dark. Where there is darkness, light will illuminate. Where there is light, there is progress.

We will see great emphasis placed on the issues of ‘free will/choice’ vs. ‘fate/determinism’ in Season 6. We will see how this pertains to the characters, in addition to the overall story and mythology of Lost. This will be an ongoing debate, just as this topic is continually debated among scientists, philosophers, theologians, and man himself. I have to wonder if (we) the audience will gain any better understanding of these issues, or be able to draw any further conclusions on the subject when Lost concludes. Or, will this be an issue that the Lost writers leave us with, to apply our own meaning and understanding to.

A Quote from Stephen Hawking’s, A Brief History in Time: “However, if we discover a complete theory, it should in time be understandable by everyone, not just by a few scientists. Then we shall all, philosophers, scientists and just ordinary people, be able to take part in the discussion of the question of why it is that the universe and we exist. If we find the answer to that, it would be the ultimate triumph of human reason, for then we should know the mind of God”.

  1. Dabs this works on many levels and seems along with the last theory written by A.E.S to be a large part of the big picture. Without seeming glib or trite could this theory as well as the coming war be described as a war with oneself.

  2. Hi daddyx, ‘Chaos Theory’ explains how the Universe works and how that relates to every living thing that is in the Universe.

The coming war has more to do with the ‘bigger’ questions that have been presented to us from the beginning of Lost. Faith vs. Free Will and who is fighting for which of these and why. That is the theme of Lost.

I am happy that you are making the connections to the ‘big picture’, as that is what I intended to outline in this theory.

My hopes are that this theory serves to compliment other ideas, as I believe the truth lies within this concept.

    Thanks for your comment.

  3. Let me tell you why this theory is good…

First of…you have applied an educated analysis of determinism and chaos in a manner that not only does it fit perfect into the scenario that you give with MIB and Jacob…

But its done in a fashion that not only does it fit…but you would not have even had to say the players names to know who it was regarding in the Lost world…it is amazing.

The examples of history (that is what history becomes…examples) could not be more perfectly chosen to use for this wonderful thought…

This is something that is unfortunatley going to getLOST in the shuffle of tomorrows premier…and it is not fair because it is a theory that should make everyone who reads it stand up and say “Oh my god…”…because that is what it immediatley did to me…

Its something that has been attempted several times to execute, but it has never been put so complicated…yet understandable….

It is something that made me have to say something about my own recent post “The Greatest Theory I Have Ever Seen…”, that as much as I love…and yes, for the first time I truly love smething I put here, due to the overwhelming responses that I received…and say that I AM WRONG on one very crucial aspect…

It has inspired me, along with Achallis recent posts, to squeeze one more theory in this evening before the end begins tomorrow…

Dabsi, this is a great theory, a wonderfully specific yet understandable explanation, and overall, one of the best theories that I have seen here.

I truly hope that everyone can appreciate what was said in this post…it isnt telling the end of the show, it isnt debunking thoughts (although it did one of mine), and it isnt giving away what is going to happen…

IT IS THOROUGHLY EXPLAINING THE WAR/DEBTE/BATTLE OF THE ENTIRE SHOW!!!

    A million stars….truly inspirational…

Thank you for taking the time and effort to not just theorize Lost, but to explain in a way that many, myself included, are simpy not capable of explaining…

  4. Wow AES, what a positively glowing report! Thank you for your kind and generous words.

I gave a great deal of thought to all of the aspects that we have seen in Lost from the beginning of the show. Like many people, I could only come up with part/s of the analysis. Pieces were missing, and none of it added up in my mind, until I followed this concept. I felt that it did address all of the aspects that we have seen over the seasons, and in addition the Fate vs. Free Will aspects, which the battle will finally come down to.

I do hope that people will consider what has been theorized here and it will assist them in understanding what the writers have in store for us in Season 6.

It is only the pre-cursor of the entire debate of Free Will vs. Fate. I fully expect that these issues will become a very ‘hot’ topic on the site.

This concept lends itself to any religious or spiritual concepts one may have personally, and whatever philosophies the writers intend to impart with viewers.

Thank you once again. Your response has literally overwhelmed me!

  5. Hi Chiefof16, I placed a lot of thinking into this yes, but I was hoping that it translated into English. LOL

Although, maybe I’ve just been looking at it too long, and it makes sense to me. Seriously, this is one theory that I’ve written that I do place faith in.

    Thanks for responding honestly!

  6. I was mostly kidding, I understand the major concepts. I actually learned quite a bit about chaos which is always good. Your theories are like the Rosetta Stone software for the physics language 🙂

  7. @dabiatchishere

Dabs, you have no need to thank me…between this and Achillis posts and question on my theory…it made me realize something very important…I dont know why or how…it just did.

I began explaining other possibilities last night in the comments of my post…and I just dont know why it didnt click then.

My mind works in strange ways, and when certain people say certain things….there is a click…and things just fly…

unfortunalty, this was a loud annoying BUZZ instead of a click…that not only made me take your theory into perspective…but my own words over the entire last season…and they are simply…there will be change on the island…and now I MUST write a correction so save whats left of my face, lol…

I got sooooooooo caught up in saying why the isalnd was not different in the scene from 2007…that I sincerely lost my marbles and said “there will be no change”…

So again, thank you… although I made a mistake…I feel that I now have the time to attempt to change what Ive already done…

  8. Hi AES, no need to apologize for anything you stated in your theory. It is a fantastic theory! You also have no need to ‘save face’.

My interpretation of your statements about ‘change’ were not so literal, and felt you had reason for stating such. I don’t feel that you mad any mistake.

I know how your mind works, and it works very quickly. That doesn’t deter from any of the brilliant thoughts that you have or bring forward, either in your comments or your theories.

I have been continually inspired by you since I arrived on this site over a year ago, and still am and will continue to be.

The whole nature of theorizing is in hopes that we inspire one another to try and figure out this mystery we know as Lost. I think we accomplish that, nicely.

Thanks again for your input and comment!

  9. Love the theory! I just signed up for this site today. How do I get a picture for my profile? I clicked on the edit profile and didnt see a way to do it there. If anyone can help me out with this it would be greatly appreciated.

  10. First off all, welcome Claireblueeyes. In order to post a picture to your profile you need to have a gravatar account. Just go to gravatar.com and sign up for an account (it’s free) and follow the instructions. After that the picture you use will show up here automatically. One other little hint, if you cocktail on any members screen name you can view their profile and a list of all the posts they’ve done.

Dabs, I never thought my little law of Eristic Escalation theory would inspire something as wonderful as you gave us here. I often find insights into Lost by relating it to other books and TV shows. One such book is the Illuminatus Trilogy. Within that book Discordinism is referenced a lot. Discordianism views the duality of the universe as order/disorder with disorder being the natural state of the universe. Order is merely the way we view and try to understand the disorder.

There is a story within the Principia Discordia, the ‘bible’ of Discordianism, that your post reminds me of.

In the beginning there was VOID. And VOID had two daughters, that of being, named Eris, and that of Non-being, named Aneris.

Eris was born pregnant and spawned Sweet, Boom, Pungent, Prickle, and Orange. Aneris had been born sterile and was jealous of the joy Wrist found in her children. So one day Aneris stole Eris’ children away and took them to the state of non-being. So Eris, distraught at what her sister had done had born more children.

The children that Eris brought forth were in a state of chaos and Eris amused herself by ordering them in different combinations. She became so engrossed in order that she had overlooked small, little disorder who went unnoticed originally because all was chaos. Eris then realized there were many ways to order chaos and many ways it cannot be ordered so she set about teaching order and disorder to play together. Eris named disorder after herself and order after her sister

Now VOID decided that being and non-being wasn’t enough and so created SPIRITUALITY.

VOID at first decreed that SPIRITUALITY would reside in both being and non-being but Eris pointed out that Aneris would steal SPIRITUALLY away and keep it for herself.

So VOID decreed that once SPIRITUALITY left the house of being that it would return to VOID.

And so it is that man does not exist until we do; we play with the world of existence and constantly order and disorder it; and then non-existence takes us away from existence while spirituality returns to Void, like a child returning from a wild circus.

Take what meaning from this that you can.

  11. @Achalli – Your Eristic Escalation theory played an integral part to furthering my interest in the ‘Chaos Theory’.

It is a theory that easily lends itself to understanding much of what we have seen on Lost. It seemed to apply to so many of the mysteries that I, personally did not have answers to. All of the smaller mysteries have to be tied into one larger one that is understandable. This fit in nicely.

What we are essentially speaking of is, a perpetual ‘cycle’ that applies to all life. It is a ‘cycle’ that is continual, without end.

Thanks again for the inspiration on this, in addition to your comments and willingness to explain things from your unique perspective. I fully appreciate your views, as they are inspiring!
