Was the Island judging Sayid?
Written 4th February
Hello — I am new but I have been lurking for a while now. I wanted to bring up the “baptizing” of Sayid in the temple.
We saw that Ben had to be judged by “the island” when he descinded into Smokey’s temple and saw Alex/the Smoke Monster, who then told him to follow the direction of John Locke. I now believe that this was Smokey setting up both Locke and Ben for his eventual return plan, obviously. Ben acted as though this is something the Others or their leaders have had to do in the past when they have acted against the island’s (Smokey’s?) wishes, perhaps something he has seen before. We used to think Ben was the leader on the island, but we came to realize there was a lot he did not know. Is it possible, that when he was going to be judged by the island, he went to the wrong temple? He went to Smokey’s, and not the one run by the Others? I think he was probably taken to the correct temple as a boy when he was injured to be healed, but he was of course half dead when that happened and it was so many years ago, it is possible he wasn’t totally sure where he was taken.
As Sayid lay dying, he began pondering where he would end up after death, going so far as to say it would not be good. Shortly after this, Jacob, in spirit, tells Hurley to take Sayid there. My theory is that when Sayid was “baptized,” he was being judged by the island. The island decided to let him live. The water was not clear – perhaps this is because of all the bad things Sayid did in his past, or because Jacob was dead. We can’t really be sure at this point. I don’t think Jacob’s note literally said “this man has to live or you’re in big trouble” – I think his letter told them what Sayid’s purpose on the island was (to save it, or the Others) and they drew their own conclusion that if Sayid died no one could save them.
