Widmore’s intent perhaps?

I’m so very sorry if this has already been mentioned. It probably has because it’s really not very far-fetched at all, and I’ve touched on the idea within comment sections…..

We know how Ben and Widmore have been at it for quite some time. They both appear to be greedy, a bit ruthless, and very determined. No matter what you think about Ben though, he sure has gone through a lot of hardtimes solely for the “good” of the island. If Ben is this insanely passionate about the island’s well-being and Widmore is his arch-rival, then surely Widmore is out to abuse/exploit the island.

I always wondered what Widmore’s motivation might be in terms of him exploiting the island. Well, since we’ve been introduced to water that can heal wounds and probably bring people back to life, I think that question is answered. Obviously we have no idea if the water maintains it’s powers once it’s taken off the island, but let’s assume it does.

If this island water can heal wounds throughout the rest of the world, the one in possession of that water would rule the planet, no question. Whoever owns the healing water could essentially do whatever they please. They could heal critically wounded people for a hefty price, bring certain people back to life, start wars, whatever they desire. Widmore definitely seems like the type of guy that’s always in need of more power and money. He went to hell and back just to cover up 815’s crash, he hires mercenaries to find the island and kill Ben, he spends a fortune on a Blackrockman’s journal. He basically seems to live his life in search of this place.

So I think Widmore’s simply after the water. He has to go through Ben first though. If this holds true, Ben has not only been protecting the island, but the entire planet all along. That would make him a good guy, which is weird.

  1. Yes, I can’t think of any other idea why Widmore acts like he does either. Unless he wants that ash for cosmetic products. It makes the wrong kind of men back off.

  2. Ben’s never done anything in his adult life that was solely for the benefit of the island. Damn near everything I can think of was mixed with his own greedy desires. Whether it be for his lust for Juliet or to take/maintain his leadership role of the Others. He has been looking out for himself.

  3. i’m not sure if its really that simple. i think widmore just has different views on what the others, and the leader of the others should be doing. even richard said ben was too concerned with novelties like maternity problems.

i don’t think it will be so cut and dry.

  4. It does seem simple, that’s the beauty of it. Why does Widmore care so much about what the others are doing though? Would he really be going through such trouble to find the island only to tell the others what they should or shouldn’t do?

  5. i think its more of a personal vendetta revenge thing against ben. i don’t thnk he is evil. ben just manipulated the situation to get widmore out. and widmore has been trying to get back at him ever since. widmore is already rich and powerful.

but thats not what he wants. he wants to be on the island again.

  6. Could be a revenge story for sure. I’d like to think there’s more to it than just getting back at Ben though. I mean, Widmore spent an ass-ton of money went through A WHOLE LOT just to find the island.

I agree he wants to be on the island again, I personally don’t think he plans a permanent stay though. I know as much as you do at this point, so who really knows.

  7. Hi Chief, thanks for bringing up this topic for discussion. It’s a very good choice.

Charles Widmore has remained somewhat of a mystery for most of Lost. In saying that, we have learned several things about Widmore. The most important of which, is his obsession with getting back to ‘the island’. Widmore feels that he is the rightful individual who should rule, thus the reason he has spent so much money trying everything that he can do to get back there.

Despite all of Widmore’s ‘worldly’ possessions, it is ‘the island that he calls home. It is very reminiscent to Nemesis saying, that all he wants to do is go home.

That is not to say, that Widmore doesn’t have ‘ulterior motives, because I think he does.

    Nice post.

  8. When was he the leader (in time range). The incident extended said Eloise was the leader in ’77.

    When/how/why did she get off-island?

How did Widmore get his $$$ in such short time? (’84 – ’96 … he was pretty rich 8 YEARS + before the constant.)

  9. Thanks Dabs and Ifoundmymothereffinloophole, and good connection to the “I just want to go home” line.

It’s safe to say that whatever Widmore’s intentions are, it means the world to him. If he simply wants control over the entire island, I’d love to know the reason behind it. I mean, obviously it’s not just a typical island. Aside from the healing water though, what else would motivate someone to do what he’s done to this point. I suppose maybe he wants to move the island to a particular location. Man, I don’t know.

  10. Well, it sure seems like the world is Widmore’s playground. Like Waycurious points out, he basically poops, breathes and pees money in only a short while (don’t think too hard about that).

I bet you’re onto something there with his birthplace being the island. Ben’s a jealous man, and he seems to have some envy towards Widmore, so it’s possible there’s something to that.

It’s been a while since anyone’s mentioned Charles Widmore. I thought it’d be good to mention him again. He’s probably still going to play a major part in all of this when it’s said and done. He IS an extremely wealthy and influential man, so it’ll be interesting to see where he fits. It’s good to discuss this matter with such a collection of Lost fans.

  11. Widmore is so prominent for the early seasons. And then he disappears, as they would say in Shawshank, “like a fart in the wind”. Either thats shit storry tellling (which I highly doubt) or they are saving the best to last.

Lets hope they do not have too many sub plots! eg black vs white, jacob vs MIB, Widmore vs Ben. But a bit weird that as per the rules certain individuals can not kill each other right? What if the next candidates are Sawyer and Jack? They always seem to want to kick each others ass? lol

ps ilieintheshadowofthestatue good one about the cosmetic ashes!

  12. Ifoundmyloophole, well, somehow I find it worth trying to figure out whether Widmore wanted all the Others dead or not. Because if he did, then one might suspect that he is only interested in exploiting the Island.

By the way, was the Freighter completely full with explosives or was it more or less empty? Was Widmore bringing explosives to blow up the Island or to freight something from the Island? Sorry, I don’t remember but perhaps someone else does?

  13. It looks like the water needs an underlying power to get its full potential. So, there needs to be some sort of ‘catalyst’ when and if it does get off the island.

I wonder if Widmore knows another catalyst..

  14. yeah widmores riches are a bigger question than why he wants the island back….he was banished when little alex was about 7 0r 8 yrs old (remember ben pushing her on the swing )this puts the year around 1995 , as she was born in 1988 when danielle arrived…..des leaves the monastry in 1995 (wine bottle) and takes up with penny…widmore is the one buying the wine!!! i have asked over and over on many sites and chatrooms, how on earth is it possible for widmore to go from jungle boy to bill gates in the same year!! no satisfactory ideas yet and all i can hope is that its not a mistake and we’ll find out about the widmore/des/ eloise time discrepancies……check out my post age discrepancies and time lines….
