There is no Flocke.

Written 17th February

Locke is very much alive.

If LOST has revealed anything, it that’s we should never overlook what’s said on the show. If you have seen ‘The Substitute’ (S06E04) already, you may remember the scene when “Flocke” shouts out “Don’t tell me what I can’t do”. Sounds familiar right? This was the very same response that came out the real Locke when he was refused entry to the Walkabout (S01E04). As I see it, there are a 3 explanations to this surreal moment.

a) It was a mere coincidence. It is a popular line that has even been said by Jack (S01E20).
b) Flocke (MIB or whatever he is) has absorbed certain characteristics of Locke

But my favourite explanation so far: There is no Flocke hence suggesting that Locke is indeed alive.

A is unlikely to be the case since the line was uttered twice by “Flocke” and that eerie, suspensful music was played when he repeated the line for the second time. Coincidence, I think not. B has potential but the idea seems too farfetched. It seems unlikely that the manifestation ability is open to flaws.

C still holds strong and would certainly make an interesting twist in the show (which the writers are well renowned for). Now it’s just a question of why Locke would pretend to be someone else pretending to be Locke! I’m open to suggestions and constructive criticism.

Thank you.

  1. Yes, why would Locke pretend to be someone else than Locke?

Because I guess we can assume that Locke wouldn’t say that John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” is a little before his time.

By the way, Locke doesn’t take bullets…

  2. Ehh. I agree that maybe MIB took on traits of Locke. Mostly because of the same reason… Locke says that line several times through the series. I don’t think that Locke is pretending to be MIB.

  3. Sawyer could immediately tell that it was not Locke…I don’t think the producers would have made that be Sawyer’s reaction if it was actually him.

I think the longer Flocke stays in Locke form, the more he will start to take on characteristics of Locke.

  4. Before the start of the new season my thought was that Locke was Locke and not someone else taking his form. Then after the premiere of LAX, believe it or not, I still had my reasons for believing (or should I say wanting to believe) that it was really Locke… So, I even had an idea on how Locke could seemingly reflect those bullets, (don’t laugh at me, because I’m laughing at myself… lol!) and how Walt’s warning had meaning.

Somehow, I thought that the Locke we were seeing was from another time and space. And, with Walt’s warning in hand, when he returned to the main island with Ben and disappeared for a while leaving Ben and Sun alone at Otherville… I thought Locke may have actually went to the Orchid station and retrieved Keamy’s body armor knowing that it would be needed, thanks to Walt.

I thought Smokey was protecting Locke, and Locke was neither MIB or Smokey, but it was MIB feeding Locke the information that was needed to achieve his goal.

I’m trying to let go now! 🙂

  5. brc9876: As far as Sawyer knowing that it wasn’t Locke… Well, one could argue that it was Locke… But, Locke has become a changed man, he has become enlightened, and he is not the scared man that he used to be, as Sawyer picked up on.

One of the last stages of Enlightenment is the re-awakening…in this stage you become spiritualy confident; you lose your arroganance, and you are no longer afraid…You just know what you need to do and what it all means.

The final stage of the enlightened is to awaken others… technically you become a teacher of sorts.

Like I said, “I’m “trying” to let go!” But, it’s not that easy! 😉

  6. It has been made obvious that he is taking the form of
Locke. The new girl from the plane said so and The Substitute episode gave us a look through the eyes of the smoke monster who then took the form of Locke after doing his search of the jungle.

I think it is just a coincedence that he said that infamous line. It is a part of the show.

  7. I think it’s plainly obvious at this point that Flocke is indeed Nemesis/Smokey. I like TawaretsAnkh’s idea that Locke is fighting Nemesis “from within”, as in, Locke’s soul/essence is held within Nemesis and fighting to get out.

We’ve seen Smokey take the form of the deceased on the island, maybe it (Smokey) is a vehicle for all dead souls (on the island)? Maybe Nemesis just happens to be the one “driving” the vehicle of Smokey because he’s “the strongest” or whatever, but now that Locke is in there too, he’s strong enough to fight for control of the vehicle (Smokey).

Nemesis wanting to “go home” could be that he wants to leave Smokey, since Nemesis is already dead (and been dead for a long time). Smokey is like Purgatory?
