Why is Shephard/Fox the only one who knows?

As it’s been reported, Matthew Fox is the only one who knows how the show ends. Apart from the creators deciding to tell him and him only, what other reasons for this could there be?

One theory i have is because the actor is required to do something in particular, as in “look” a certain way or go to a certain place i.e. grow a beard, get a tattoo, or something, likely for the last scene/episode. Having said that, an hour in makeup can accomplish that so it must be something bigger.

Or they all got drunk and it slipped out.

I have no real solid theories, just though it would be interesting to discuss.

  1. in 2012 Fox will be the subject of a new reality show called “How to drive a star crazy”.

First episode they pull Mathew Fox in to the office and tell him how the show will end. Then you leak it in a press conference or tv interview and follow him around with cameras for a year while everybody (and I mean EVERYBODY) tries to get him to spill the beans.

This post should be under FUN, not questions…

  2. I think that if it is actually factual that only Matthew Fox knows the ending, Jack has got to be the key character in how LOST ends. He needs to be privy since he is probably teh character seen on screen.

  3. That is very interesting. I remember reading and article a while back about Fox saying he would not commit to another show like Lost. I am guessing he is key in this and that is why he was so focused and centeral in the story line. Sure we are given certain information about Jack but I am still seeing a lot of mystery around him. Therefore, whatever it is…its big on his part and character to keeping us hooked.

  4. I agree w/lostontheisland. This whole show’s about Jack. Think John is is alter side. Show will end w/Jack realizing something and end w/his eye opening or closing.

Fox knew from the begining. Don’t know for whom the show was a vehicle.

(Of course, if Kate’s not a number the show could be about HER staying on the island, which I ponder since hers is the only character whose life sucks in AltTimeLine now John/Rose are ‘dealing’ with their issues … oh, and Charlie – but he’s destined to die anyway.)

But, since this is about Jack/Fox, I’ll stick w/option A for this post ; )

  5. One other point…Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof were on Jimmy Kimmel and announced that the series finale will be May 23rd, a Sunday which was odd to end on a Sunday. They said that they really wanted that date and got it. Jack’s number on Jacob’s cave wall is 23. Perhaps 23 was the only “LOST number” that week, but interesting to note nonetheless.

  6. I agree Jack is central now.. but that doesnt explain why Fox would know how it ends. I also read that Jack was originally intended to die in the pilot but they liked Fox so much that they kept him on. This makes me think that while they had the overall story planned out and apparently the final scene, they didnt necessecarily know which characters would be in the that scene, im guessing they left it fairly flexible to fit anyone.
It may simply have been part of contract negotiations. Fox may have been getting some big offers and a condition to him staying on Lost was finding out how long it would go for and how it ended for his character. Im guessing he wouldnt want to stick around and then get killed off halfway through a season.
Good pickup about the 23rd date and Jack’s number on the wall…

  7. I am most in agreement with DonM. I think that Jack was actually supposed to die in the first episode or two but the writers kept him and needed his help in working him in in anyway possible and needed Fox’s help to make it work, so they told him to get him in on the deal to help them!

I think Jack is going to die before the end of the show, if not on the final episode…..

  8. I’m surprised no one added this comment until now, but here you go. Yes, Fox has stated that he’s “the only one who knows how the show’s going to end”. But Cuse and Lindelof commented on Fox’s statement afterward, saying that he knows how it ends for Jack/from the perspective of his character, but not necessarily the whole big picture.
