speculation on Pierre Chang in Recon
Miles says that Charlotte Lewis is an associate of his father’s at an LA museum. This suggests either
A) Pierre Chang is alive and well and he and Miles have a good relationship.
B) Mrs Chang re-married and Miles’ stepfather works there.
the first speculation is problematic for me, given that Pierre Chang was last seen in the episode The Incident, injured, right next to the Swan station before the incident, and that the logical start point for the alternate time line is that moment in 1977.
Juxtapose this fact with the following:
the island is seen underwater in this alt reality (in “LA X”).
Roger Linus talks to Ben about the island, suggesting that he and Ben were evacuated aboard the submarine just before the explosion or incident (in “Dr. Linus”).
Charlotte also made it off the island (in “Recon”).
Widmore is alive and well despite not having access to the sub as a means of evacuation (in “Recon”). He was last seen in the Hostiles camp near the temple where Daniel was shot (“The Incident”). His survival leads me to wonder if Eloise also made it off the island by other mysterious means, possibly with Richard (last seen in “The Variable”).
If there is any consistency here I fail to see it right off.

I think you seem to be getting some timelines mixed up.. For example I dont remember Widmore being mentioned in the Alternate Timeline in Recon (unless of course i just missed it).. So do we know for a fact he’s alive or are we just assuming?
I agree with SawyersGirl. Also, I think that since Miles is alive and well in the alternate reality, perhaps we might guess that Pierre got off the Island together with his son and the other Dharma children.

I think it is obvious that if what we are seeing is a branched time line, then the branch occurred before the Incident. Otherwise, those problems you mentioned don’t make sense.
Which of course raises the questions: When did the branch occur? What caused the branch to occur? Is the flash sideways a branched time line at all?
Penelopedean, do you suggest that the Incident has not happened in the ATL? I assume that *something* happened in the ATL that made the Island sink some time after Ben and others left the Island.
If the island didn’t sink in 1977, that could explain how they all get off. We just see DV and the foot underwater in 2004 so that could have happened anytime between 1977 and 2004, it could have been sudden or a slow sinking so people had time to leave.
Hmm, I had a theory that the alternate timeline is completely separate i.e. not branched from the island timeline. It is it’s own timeline!
Also, Ben’s father is still alive in the alternate timeline, too. And Ben had killed him a long time before the incident. So, I think Miles’ father would be alive in the alternate timeline as well.
Actually, Ben killed his father quite a while after the incident, during the purge.
It’s kind of up in the air at the moment about the ALT… until we see real differences between the ALT and the first timeline we saw before 1977 then we just won’t know unless they tell us that it’s branched or completely separate.
The conversation Ben has with his dad seems to suggest that they left the island by choice, not by evacuation. That makes me think that the island didn’t sink immediately following the incident so it’s possible that Pierre was able to leave the island before it went under the water.
highbrow – Yes, you are right! Sorry, I was thinking the purge happened before the incident for some reason. I wonder why they would leave by choice though?
