Why did Sawyer let Kate go?

in LA X part 2 Sawyer spots Kate in the elevator, knowing she was under guard on flight 815 and he lets her go. What kind of a cop would do that?

The only answer I can come up with is: He did not want to have to explain why he lied about going to Palm Springs and was in Australia to his superiors or his partner.

Anyone else have any other thoughts?

  1. LOL not only was he “very off duty” at the time, but also relationships that existed on the island seem to exist in the new reality. Ben is still a “father” or athority figure to Alex, etc. Sawyer and Kate have always had it goin’ on!
