MIB is infected, but not himself “evil”

I will start out as I always do, by thanking people who have inspired me and apologizing to those who have said this before and whose theories I am unaware of. I don’t read all the theories on here (half, at most).

There has been a lot of talk recently on the evil not being let off the island being connected to the infection, rather than just MIB. I was thinking along the same lines. I also think that MIB is infected, and has been infected now for a VERY long time.

Jacob and MIB were once close friends. I’m not sure how they got to the island, or their backstory, but upon reaching the island his friend either dies, or gets infected with the evil. Jacob is told by his predecessor (former island protector) that he must kill his friend, but can not do it. He still thinks there is good inside of his friend (similar to how Luke believed his father Darth Vader, had a little bit of good in him left as well). Jacob knows that although he doesn’t want to kill his friend, he can not let him leave the island in order to protect the world from the evil that will spread. So instead he keeps his friend around, trying to convince him that people are good deep down (and therefore so is he).

The friend might also be following an older person inhabited by the evil, but now is the “main” infected person. Being the island’s protector gives you power’s (Jacob’s healing, eternal life giving, etc.) as does being the main evil person (turning into smoke, taking on other people’s forms). The person on the island infected the longest is this main evil person.

Jacob has had a near impossible time convincing his friend, who manipulates and kills the people Jacob brings to try and convince him of the good. So Richard shows up, and convinces Jacob to be a bit more hands on. Everything in the show stems from this.

Jacob feels a bit guilty about his friend, and is willing to die to try and make his friend see the good, or maybe even drive the evil from him. This is why Jacob is never angry at MIB, even when he wants to kill him (and does). He is a friend and Jacob feels partly responsible for his situation.

In the end I believe the evil will be released from Flocke, but not from the island, as Sayid becomes the new main evil guy (I think Claire will die soon) and probably Jack becomes the new Jacob. But I’m not sure about Jack.

I rarely get into tv shows, but as you know lost is something else. I am a daytime, weekday theorist. I usually don't check in on weekends or nights. Helps me get through the workday. favorite characters: eko (duh), desmond, miles, sayid.

  1. I’m partly in agreement here. I think the man in black wasn’t a bad guy but has been killed and his body possessed by the smoke monster.. The ways things are going I am sure the smoke is gonna be the devil. I do think that the island is gonna be the gates of hell. The cork of hell just doesn’t quite have the same menacing tone. The smoke has escaped because of mib and has taken on his form. Jacob realises this and obviously sets on doing what we are seeing currently. I love your idea about Jacob feeling responsible and the mib having the hatred for this reason. I still maintain though that the end will be the very beginning of this season. The island still a gateway to hell but safe from all underwater. Jack being the only survivor. Sorry for the tangents but I’ve been quite unwell, your post just gave me a bit of inspiration (if you can call it that)

  2. I like the ideas, but do you think we will get an understandable explanation for the history of the smoke monster/MIB/Jacob? To me this will determine whether Lost has a satisfying ending or an annoying, anticlimactic or WTF ending. Good points on the dynamic between the characters though!

  3. thanks guys. I don’t totally agree with this theory, but I just tried to join together a couple of ideas I had and this is what I came up with.

@ Halapeno, I do think well get at least a somewhat understandable explanation, with a few things left open for interpretation. I believe they will show their more human sides and motivations.

no matter what i expect nothing less than a wtf ending…whether or not its good we will have to see

  4. I don’t think the infection itself is enough to make someone so bad that they would be referred to as Evil Incarnate. I doubt that MiB was a good guy that stumbled onto a hole in the cork and the evil got into him, and gave him powers and cause him to be a source of spreadable evil. Plus we know that people that are infected are “slaimed” when they are about to die. So if there wasnt an infected source of evil on the island already, how would MiB almost die and become infected?

Stories like that are cool when a good person gets taken over by evil, and then the story turns into saving that person, or mercy killing them to free them from the evil. I dont think that will be the case here. And I really dont see the story ending with someone becoming the new evil on the island. That would be a major jip. Hopefully the story will end with a big fat dead smokey.

  5. I think everyone on the island will die except for the two new candidates (one dark and one light).

The question is, who will these two be?

    (dark and light)
FLocke and Jack: The whole man of science/man of faith fits in nicely to this.

Sawyer and Jack: The struggle between these two characters has been going on since day 1 and throwing kate in the middle of this would work

? and hurley: Hurley fits nicely into a Jacob role with his special power and his deep connection with the island.

sayid and ?: Shown in your thoughts in your post

David and AAron: Jacks alt timeline son and his nephew… anything can happen on lost.

i could see the MIB appearing to Hurley as charlie and somehow convincing sayid to kill him (saw in another post). which will surely piss someone off who in return will kill sayid. 2 down. i could see Jack vs Sawyer as the two new candidates with kate in the middle. Hopefully in a thong.

another question, Where does Christian fit into all of this?

If it was MIB the whole time, where was christians body and why did the writers drill into our head that it is different what happened to him than to Alex, Richards wife, and Locke.

If it is someone working with MIB, Why? wheres jacobs dead guy?

The most fitting explanation for Christian would be he is above MIB and Jacob (“everybody answers to somebody”) who are brothers. Christian is on MIB side and their “crazy” mother is on Jacobs. Pulled right out of the bible with the story of Jacob and Esau.

  6. Eko…
I cant express how much I like this thought.

I actually dont agree with most of the minor details, but the main point of MIB being infected is something to not necessarily ponder…but try and figure out the “how?”…

Kudos…5 stars for the thought alone…Im going to read through the deatils again, and get back with more specific insight…great thought…

  7. @ wharfrat – i agree that only two will be left on the island. I like hurley because he seems like he always tries to see the good in people, although he lacks in the manipulation and planning dept. the christian question is one I simply have no clue about. any idea i have is either completely based in assumption or has evidence against it

@ aes – gracious as always my friend thanks. I await your thoughts on the matter.

  8. I like some of this alot. I started thinking about how Faraday experimented on himself and messed himself up. I’m not sure what MIB could have been trying to do but he may have done this to himself and Jacob wouldn’t abandon him, as you said Eko. Only Faraday’s mom wasn’t crazy. Perhaps, as some have suggested Jacob and MIB were alchemists and something went wrong when they tried to create the Philosophers Stone.
