Desmond, the new Jacob?

I just thought i’d throw it out there and see what people think. Probably not a fresh thought but…could ‘the package’ be Jacobs replacement in some way? I got the feeling from Desmonds odd appearance on the plane in the alt that there would be some reason why, but we haven’t seen him show up in the alt again, yet. It seemed very Jacob-esque, zen like, not forgetting that Desmond was once a monk.
What if even if its just in the alt, he has some sort of position like Jacob. I got nothing to back this up really, but i’m just trying to pre-empt the next episode, so i guess we’ll find out next week.

I’m also wondering, Widmore is obviously aware of Desmonds importance, but was Jacob?
Is Des a candidate i can’t remember his name being on that list, was Jacob even aware of his existence on the island? Even more importantly, was MIB/smokey aware of him? Maybe thats why he was kept secret in that hatch, until the day he was ‘accidentally’ endowed with Doctor Who type powers.
It would seem Widmore has thrown his own ‘variable’ into the equation.

Can’t wait for next week.

I'm a hiphop producer from London, and obviously a huge fan of Lost. Its a bit of a love/hate thing as its made me cynical of all other TV shows (Heroes being one of the most overrated poorly written shows i've seen). Never been into much big american TV drama or Sci-fi, more into british comedy, but Lost has been amazing, and i really hope it continues that awesomeness in its final season. I'm usually pretty good at predicting the end of a story which can annoy people around me, but this show is so intricately constructed, even in its 2nd to last season, i still don't have a clue. I'm trying my best though.

  1. Good thought about Desmond being the “new Jacob”. Perhaps showing up on 815 (LAX episode) was Desmond’s visit to Jack (as Jacob had visited Jack in the hospital near the vending machine). Not sure how it all makes sense, but not a bad idea.

  2. I’ve been thinking along similar lines here Shepards Flocke. Remember that what Desmond was doing in the hatch was effectively like ensuring that the E/M pocket remained corked. Also, remember that the underground tunnels to the Swan were sealed up. This can be seen on the Blastdoor map and was commented on by Sayid. I did a post once theorizing that this was done in order to keep Smokey from getting into the Swan.

  3. If Des is the new Jacob than to me that would mean that the candidates arent possible replacements but maybe just players in this game? Seems totally possible to me, I dont believe its ever been said on the show that one of these “candidates” is suppose to take over for Jacob. Of course, the writers IMO have been leading us that direction but with the sudden return of Desmond, it really could be the pivitol point in the story.

Now, I am thinking(little off topic)…and come to think of it now, Des and MIB have a bit in common. Remember, Desmonds uproar about going to the island? He was totally like eff this and split. Also, I think I remember him resenting his job in the hatch. Just poiting out that the feelings Desmond has towards the Island is much like MIBs. Actually, MIB and most of the Losties have one HUGE thing in common. They all want off the Island.

But when/if they find out what happens if MIB gets off than it just comes down to who cares about the world off the island, who has something they will want to protect.

Jin&Sun- Aside from their daughter, I believe they are both good.

Claire&Kate- Both only really care about Aaron.

Richard- Motivated by his dead wife to stop the MIB.

Hurley- I believe is just entirely good. I mean have we once seen him hurt somebody unless it was to save somebody else? Because of this good nature of his some have been talking about him being the new Jacob. But after black rock landed, I cant picture Hurley drownding Richard to prove a point. Therefore, Hurley is TOO good to be Jacob but I wouldnt mind at all being wrong on this cause I love Hurley lol.

Jack- The Shepphard-enough said. He will always side with good.

Sawyer- I dont know about, he cried for Juliet, he has an emotional side, he is mad as hell for sure, his disposition doesnt scream I am GOOD but one thing, even dispite being a con, IMO Sawyer is loyal. He’s got history with Kate and Kate good.

Sayid- I dont see a future for him. Thats why I am so thrown by him showing up in last epidsodes flash sideways. However, his name is on the wall. But what does he have off the island that he would want to protect and motivate him to stop MIB?

And if they do stop MIB, by blowing up the plane or whatever(why hasnt Widmore already done it?) how will the Losties ever leave and what exactly is this flash sideways all about than? Maybe the sub? Everybodys gonna fit on the sub?

I know I am missing a lot. Correct me if anything at all is messed up. I would have made this a separate post in response to yours but everytime I write something, I never see it again.

  4. It is interesting to note that Damon Lindelof tweeted this right after the last episode: “In one week, the conversation is going to change.” My take on this is that we will see more about the time traveling and time anomalies, and that most of our theories will fly out of the window because of something we will see on April 6th ep. Desmond’s ability to “see” things in the possible futures will surely come into play. I don’t know about you, but I am going to read everything about Des on LostPedia to get my facts about him straight before next Tuesday!

  5. I believe Desmond has a huge part to play on the island. I have wondered why his name hadn’t been given as a possible candidate – but also wonder if there is some connection to Wallace/108 on the lighthouse wheel – Desmond and Wallace both being of Scottish descent. Maybe Desmond’s last name was changed somewhere along the way to protect him?

I also agree that his appearance to Jack on the plane was indeed Jacob-esque, pointing to things to come. I question whether or not Jacob was truthful about the role of the candidates. We have seen him bend the truth in order to accomplish what he felt necessary (in leading Jack to the lighthouse). So perhaps Desmond is the replacement and the candidates are just helpers.

I think Desmond’s future role is the reason Widmore wanted to keep him away from Penny. Widmore seems to know more than we do – and I think he didn’t want to see Penny fall in love with someone she couldn’t be with for the rest of her life – since he too knew the island wasn’t yet done with Des.

  6. From my comment-

“I dont believe its ever been said on the show that one of these “candidates” is suppose to take over for Jacob. ”

I stand corrected, it was MIB who said this about the candidates…

The Man in Black explained that each candidate (or, at least in Sawyer’s case) has three options:

    To do nothing and see how things play out (and possibly their name will be crossed off the list);
To take over Jacob’s position as protector of the Island; or…
To leave the Island and move on with their lives. (

So somebody could be the new Jacob. Also, war is coming.

Through reading Lostpedia, I have made an observation which has now turned into an assumption. The last remaining names not crossed out are Ford, Jarrah, Shephard, Reyes, and Kwon. Which Kwon, Sun or Jin? My moneys on Jin, maybe him being a candidate is why he survived the frieghter explosion.

As far as Sun being dead, I dont know but I dont think she is the candidate.

  7. Maybe Desmond isn’t a candidate b/c he’s not a replacement, but can somehow have a very important place on the island in ‘HIS OWN’ right, and NOT IN THE SHADOW OF THE STATUE.

  8. confused as well

Desmond according to Faraday is uniquely special, the rules don’t apply to him, can anyone answer why..maybe I missed a crucial part of a certain episode

  9. has anyone said about the possibility of desmond’s exposure to electro magnetivity and how they asked jin about the spots on the map with the pockets of energy playing a part? an essential part of the battle with mib, especially the smokey part of him.
