Jacob’s Bi-Polarity

Written 31st March

Ok, here is something that’s been bugging me since Ab Aeterno…

In the Season 5 finale, during the climatic scene at the statue’s foot where Ben confronts Jacob in MIB’s presence (as Flocke), and ultimately drives the dagger through Jacob’s chest precipitating his death… Jacob makes NO EFFORT to try to convince Ben not to kill him. He simply points out that he is free to listen to Flocke, or to walk away. But does not interfere with his free will…

However, in Ab Aeterno, where MIB is playing similar cards (only this time manipulating Richard instead of Ben) in a ploy to kill Jacob (thinking he has found his loophole), when Richard approaches the statue at the beach determined to kill Jacob with it… Jacob JUMPS HIM, decks him repeatedly, reduces him to the ground and prevents him from carrying out what he was set out for…

So, why this bi-polar behaviour? Why does he interfere with Richard, but not with Ben? It doesn’t make sense that he stops Richard on the beach, and minutes later while they’re talking in front of the fire, he tells Richard that he doesn’t want to interfere – well, guess what? YOU JUST DID!!! My jaw can definitely confirm that!!!

I don’t get Jacob, and I definitely don’t trust him. There’s something in his eyes that makes me think he’s hiding something (hats off to the casting people!). Did you notice how he rolls his eyes to the side when Richard tells him that MIB told him he was the devil? Like he was thinking “Damn, he knows!”…

On the other hand, there is a trust-worthy look in MIB’s eyes, you can’t help but be sympathetic to the chap when he’s talking – that is, until you remember his favourite past-time: killing people by sucking them up into his black smoke form!!!

  1. Did you notice the sneaky look he gives Richard after he says “no one comes in unless I invite them”? I had to laugh out loud just because it was such a blatant “sly” look. Perfect actor to play Jacob!

  2. Yeah!!! It was as if he was saying: “and I’m DEFINITELY not inviting YOU in!!!”

    LOL

Mark Pellegrino is a definite “10” for the role….

  3. This topic was kind of discussed in another post a week or so ago and my thoughts are that the writers are probably double bluffing us.

To begin with we see Jacob as good and MIB as bad. however, certain thoughts and events have made viewers doubt this assumption slightly and i’m sure this added doubt was done on purpose. It stops us viewers knowing is good and who is bad just yet. Until we know EXACTLY wtf is going on and the meaning behind the actions, i dont think we can make any rock solid conclusions on Jacob and MIB.
