MIB is a Changeling, and Roger Zelazny seems pretty cool

Written 31st March

Hi all! Before I begin may I put in the disclaimer – I did a search on “changelings” and “Roger Zelazny” before I started and didn’t find anything on this site, so I am very sorry if anyone has mentioned this already!!

So, I was doing some research on water myths to see if I could find any obscure resemblances in mythology to MIB’s inability to travel over water.

During my research I happened to read about a water creature called Melusine – a feminine creature depicted as a mermaid. From http://www.lenntech.com/water-mythology.htm – “One story tells us she was born to the fay Pressyne and a common man, and taken to the isle of Avalon when she was little to grow up there. When she heard of her human father betraying her mother, she sought revenge on him. Her mother heard of this and cursed her to look like a serpent from the waste down.”

Naturally this got me interested, as it reminded me of Kate and her original timeline back-story. I decided to read a little more on Melusine, and Wikipedia tells us that Melusine is one of the water fairies that are responsible for changelings, and gives us an example of a water fairy that spirited away an infant and raised it as her own child..

So this got me thinking, what do we know about Changelings? Have a read here: http://www.monstropedia.org/index.php?title=Changeling

Now, I’m not trying to say that the island is full of trolls and fairies! Because that would be way worse than the island being a spaceship. But with what we know about Jacob and MIB:

– MIB had a crazy mother
– MIB had some growing pains
– MIB and Jacob are “old friends” – I don’t believe they are ‘blood’ related

So, my far-fetched thought for the week is – what if MIB’s mother thought there was something “wrong” with MIB when he was a baby, and she abandoned him, and kidnapped Jacob as a baby because she thought he was “better”. Years past, and the guilt of her doing this makes her crazy. I don’t want to guess any more from here, because knowing Lost I will probably change my mind in a couple of days time after doing some more re-watching and reading!!

Also, reading all of the changeling myths on the Monstropedia site and other sites, I could not get out of my mind the vision of Sawyer finding Aaron – laying there in the bush back in Season 4. Which then made me think, why was Aaron abandoned? Because Christian came and got Claire in the middle of the night. Maybe Christian is MIB’s (or Jacob’s, I haven’t really thought this through) father, and he particularly manipulated that situation to either change or continue on with the chain of events that appear to be going on, the end goal of Christian’s assistance maybe some sort of resolution for the well-being of MIB eg. helping with his emotional freedom? Ok, i’m typing this quite late at night.

From one of the sections in Wikipedia regarding changelings: In Eastern Nigeria they refer to an ogbanje – “When a woman would have numerous children either stillborn or die early in infancy, the traditional belief was that it was a malicious spirit that was being reincarnated over and over again to torment the afflicted mother”. This reminded me of many people who have theorised that Jacob or MIB were somehow trying to reincarnate themselves or are somehow affecting women’s ability to give birth on the island (I personally believe though that the inability to give birth is related to Jughead & radiation ;), but thought I should give this a mention as others have theorised this in the past).

Now I have no theories as to why Jacob has a gift, why MIB is all smokey-like, why they don’t die, what is the meaning of life. I just really liked the changeling myth and with the idea of abandoned babies and good/bad babies – I could not help but see a correlation here.

One other cool thing I came across while looking up changelings – Roger Zelazny. Roger Zelazny was an author of a number of well-known sci-fi and fantasy books, including:

Changeling – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Changeling_%28novel%29
Jack of Shadows – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_of_Shadows
The Chronicles of Amber – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chronicles_of_Amber

Whether or not the Lost writers were influenced by Zelazny (I have never heard them mention him) – I’m not sure. But if you read through the 3 above links, you can see some exciting similarities to Lost and it certainly makes me want to order a few books off Amazon when I get the chance!

They also mention that a common trademark or motif in Zelazny’s novels is the “absent father”. I’d say the majority of our candidates had absent fathers (we can’t be certain about Sayid’s, but can only guess) for whatever reason, so found this similarity interesting also.

Now back to the very beginning of my post – I said I was looking up water myths in relation to Smokey’s inability to cross water. After all that, I think I’ve decided on something completely removed from myths and legends – the Smoke Monster portion of MIB contains some electro-something-or-rather elements, therefore, if he tries to cross water – he might get electrocuted 😉

Thanks for reading!

  1. Ooh and one more thing, I read somewhere that the 1979 horror “The Changeling” is one of Stephen King’s favourite horror movies 😉 Plus, he mentions the term “changeling” in “Christine”. I know, just a mention, but we know the Lost writers love Stephen King! 🙂

  2. Good ideas. Yes far fetched, but what isnt on this show. And it could be possible that Christian helped by getting Claire to abandon Aaron. There are theories that jacob is Aaron, so if that were the case it makes sense:

“Maybe Christian is MIB’s (or Jacob’s, I haven’t really thought this through) father, and he particularly manipulated that situation to either change or continue on with the chain of events that appear to be going on, the end goal of Christian’s assistance maybe some sort of resolution for the well-being of MIB”

  3. Thanks nachochris, after tonight’s episode I think the ultimate end goal for the show will be around the containment of the electromagneticstuff and I think MIB’s smokey essence is somehow linked to it hence why ‘scientifically’ he also needs to be contained there. I do still believe though that we will get a back-story on Jacob/MIB and it will involve them having major parent issues of some sort (oh it has to!). I think Christian is a third entity on the island yet to be revealed, and is the parent figure/representation of MIB or Jacob or both. I think I’ve just repeated what I said earlier lol eeh shouldn’t comment so late at night!
