Desmond & 815’s Manifest

So Desmond wants to show the other passengers of 815 that there is an alternate reality/time-line, even if he can’t articulate it in such a way. Widmore and others have said that Desmond is very special, that he has unique talents, and that the rules don’t apply to him. Maybe the “rule” is that “you can’t travel back and forth between time-lines”, thus giving weight to Eloise’s comment that “it is, in fact, a violation”. (Of course, if that is true then Eloise is breaking the rules too, since she couldn’t know about island-Desmond any other way).

It seems that Widmore brought Desmond to the island as his game-changer; the real key to success in the war for the island. Assuming that is true, we must also assume that he is the game-changer because of his unique talent, which seems to be his ability to switch between time-lines (I’ll call it “time-swap” to simplify; maybe the phrase will catch on, who knows?). So I’ll follow through with my assumption and say that Desmond is the game-changer only because time-swapping is the game-changer, and he’s the only one who can do it.

So what does Desmond plan on telling the other 815 passengers? If that’s the key to success, then who does he need to talk to to change the game? My guess is that Locke will be the most important person in that respect. Locke is dead on the island, buried, and his soul is perhaps stuck within the vessel of the Smoke Monster. I believe that when Desmond gets Locke to “touch” the island time-line from the ATL, he will somehow alter the way the Smoke Monster operates, since Locke is trapped inside of it in the island time-line. Or perhaps if Locke dies in the ATL, his “soul from the ATL” will enter his dead body on the island. Something crazy like that would not be a total shock from these writers, and it also keeps alive my belief that Locke will be the hero at then end somehow, someway.

Started watching Lost in September 2009; finished Seasons 1-5 in 20 days.. my wife was not thrilled during this time. I am a believer in John Locke and that he may somehow still play a key (and good) role on the island.

  1. I really like the idea behind this.

I have toyed with the idea for a long time that Helen will die of a brain aneurysm and Locke will then accept returning to the island.
So Im definitely in on this thought…I have to think about certain details, but I agree with the premise entirely.

One tweak I would make, and this is a theory that never evolved into being posted…

Is that Locke dies off island, and is then pushed into the “Locke” body that MIB is using, possibly pushing him out (picture Locke walking out of the smoke) and MIB then being able to take the form of none other than Christian Shephard…then “showdown”…

Great thoughts with Des, sorry to cram my Locke thought in, but I can see your off island scene playing out, and that is the direction I would take it…

Love the theory…agree with the rules, Desmonds importance, and I really believe that this is the way our Locke will return…

  2. Great theory, I love the term ‘time-swapping’.
A.E.S – love the visual of Locke walking out of the smoke.
A quick comment which hopefully is in line with what has been posted here.
I believe Nemesis is trying to get to the alternate reality by using the candidates – by doing so, he will be free of the island (because it is sunk, likely blown up internally by the H-bomb, the explosion of which was slower than the ‘time-swap flash’).
I also believe this travel to the alternate reality by Nemesis and candidates will lead to the demise of the ‘true’ reality, for it seems only one reality can exist independently. Widmore knows this. Desmond, the ‘game-changer’, recruited by Widmore, will use his time-swapping abilities to try to stop this from happening, or if it does happen, try to force it to reverse itself from the alternate reality back to the true reality before it is too late (or something along those lines?).
On that note, perhaps Desmond needs to communicate to the candidates in the alternate reality because they are the key to being able to somehow block Nemesis’s plan from happening, or reverse it (note: the travel to the alternate reality is similar to when they ‘flashed’ to the island circa 1970 and is different from Desmond’s time-swapping).
One final thought: Wallace, candidate 108 (crossed-out). Sounds a lot like ‘Wall-less’.
    Is Desmond Wallace/Wall-less?
And: 108 = the sum of the current candidates. The sum of the candidates = the ability to travel “wall-lessly” to the alternate reality…?

  3. Hi Inquisitor, I definitely share similar thoughts as you regarding Desmond and his importance at this crucial stage.

I’ve always referred to Ms. Hawking as ‘The Oracle’ or ‘The Gatekeeper’ as she is aware of ‘time issues’ and what seems to apply when travelling between these two realities. She didn’t display these talents until after Daniel’s on ‘island’ death and took possession of his journal, so perhaps this is where her skills began.

My understanding of what Desmond will tell the other ‘losties’ is similar to what Charlie told him. He will assist them in remembering life on ‘the island’ and who they are.

I wouldn’t rule out Walt as being someone that might be of assistance. He also has ‘special abilities’.

I would absolutely love to see the real John Locke make a return to ‘the island’ as well. I suppose if I had to say that one person on the show that deserves a heroic and spectacular ending is John Locke.

    Great theory!

  4. Thanks for the good comments, guys! I’ve never lost faith in the fact that Locke will somehow return as our hero. Interesting to also think about Nemesis using the candidates to somehow time-swap to the ATL. Maybe time-swapping to a time-line in which the island is destroyed/sunken/inactive is the only way to truly “go home”.
