The other side of the looking glass..

Rather than being an alternate timeline, this is most definately (in my mind) a parallel timeline.
It sounds obvious, but think of all the things that have happened..
Hurley’s win makes him feel lucky instead of cursed
Desmond has the respect of Widmore
Daniel is doing his music instead of his maths.
Des is not with Penny, despite her being his boss’s daughter
Sawyer is a cop instead of a con-man.
Jin and Sun are not married, but he isn’t shooting blanks either.
Locke has acceptance over his disability.

It really is like the other side of the mirror, the grass is generally greener on the other side, except in the case of Charlie, but then he’s gone from being the one of the band who didnt want to get into drugs, to being the one who starts off the drugs.
It is almost a complete opposite of the main things that keep our Losties themselves on the original timeline.
When Jack looks through the mirror in the lighthouse, we see Jack recognise his childhood home. who’s to say Jacob hasnt been checking up on the other side.

To show an example of my reasoning for this theory i give you

JACK’S APPENDIX SCAR
In the sideways flash, he spots it, and muses that it is on the wrong side, and not just because he is looking in the mirror. It should be on the right (like mine) but it’s not, it’s on the left. Jack is a doctor, he knows like I do, that if your appendix is on the left, you would generally have a bigger scar stretching across. SO either he is a mirror image of himself.. or that’s one clever doctor.

  1. is it possible that the parralel universe is the the life after the island but the people are living the lives depnding on which side they choose jacobs or mib? jacks life in the parralel is good as he choose jacobs side so is ben he has the safety of his daughter, hurley and also the original locke possibly desmond too yet to see which side he will choose guessing its jacobs, but sayids life is poor hes not with the woman he loves and hes also killed! im guessing if MIB can reunite jin and sun they will choose his side, kate is still on the run, and claire is struggling to give away her baby meaning she will end up bringing it up. sayid life isnt to happy either he still in search of revenge.

  2. Interesting take on the whole ATL thing, I must admit. There really must be more to it than being “what would’ve happened if the plane didn’t crash”.

  3. I see a lot of merit to the “Sideways=Taking Sides” idea. It does seem MIB’s Losties are having a harder time of it Sideways.

I think the mirror being a view into Sideways deserves consideration. Every episode has a “Sideways Reflection” scene. Could it be that JACK created the Sideways by breaking the mirror? What if Jacob wanted Jack to break the mirror, which created Sideways which is Jacob’s loophole…somehow.

Re: Jack’s research on appendectomy because if what your saying is true, then Sideways is stranger than I thought.

  4. What confuses me a bit (among a trillion other things on LOST…lol)is that Island Time is 2007 (e.g. verified for example when “Locke” told Jin that Sun return after 3 yrs ;Flight 815 crashed in 2004). And Alt reality is 2004 when 815 flew from Australia to LA. Right? Or am I more confused that I thought I was? If so, they can be parallel but we are seeing ALT 3 years earlier then Island events.

  5. Lostonlongisland, how about this:

For sake of assumption, let’s say Jughead’s detonation did two things:
    1) Create the Sideways
    2) Flash the Losties to 2007.

If the Losties woke up in 2007, why shouldn’t the Sideways start then also, despite it still being 2004 in SW (convoluted, I know).

  6. Very nice post. I agree, there is definitely a theme of mirror-image here, nice job with the comparisons… and especially with the appendix scar. Great pickup on that potential clue.

I think that Nemesis/MIB is trying to get to the alternate reality – that is his escape plan, his ‘time-loop’. Once there, he is free of the island.

Interestingly, I consider Jacob and Nemesis as mirror-images of one another. So if Nemesis succeeds, what does that mean? Would it mean that he was successful in getting into the reality that represents him, compared to the ‘true’ reality that represents Jacob?

  7. its aso important to remember that in the alt its 2003 but when desmond had flashes of the original time line it showed the birth of his child which we can assume happened closer to 2007 which would suggest that at some point the losties have gone back in time to start over? this would answer jacks scar but then also raises the question about patches eye and claires baby.

  8. helentink- I’ve been thinking also that the images in the mirror was the flashsideways but didn’t have any reason or proof why. then you pointed out the “mirror” image of the scar. i like it.

Hydra Island- The breaking of the mirror couldn’t have caused the FSW. Breaking the mirror in 2007 couldn’t cause a split in time in the 1970’s (they pointed out it took place decades ago), much has changed in that time that took place pre 2004(jacks son ect.). It also goes against the thought that Jacob was looking into the FSW with the mirror if it took the breaking of it to cause the FSW. It was Jughead that caused the split.

  9. lostonlongisland-
Special thanks to Mason Dixon(read his latest post).

The reason why the FSW is in 2004 and the main timeline is in 2007-
First, I want to theorize that the island is the gateway to both universes, it is a common point, an access point.

When Jughead exploded it did a few things (like hydra island said) it 1) Create the Sideways 2) Flash the Losties to 2007. It created the FSW because the huge amount of energy of the nuclear bomb mixed with the huge amount of energy from the incident caused so much catastrophic damage to the wrinkle of time that it split the timeline. In this timeline the island sinks with jughead. Think of the two huge magnets the Widmore put Desmond in between before he “flashed” to the FSW.

The losties went directly back to the most current time in there original timeline that has existed. They wouldn’t go to 2004 they would go to their “most recent link in time” as mason dixon would say. In this timeline Jughead didn’t sink the island but forced DHARMA to use the hatch that they were building to harness the energy and release it slowly using a button. I believe it also caused the infertility on the island.
