Dark Tower/Lost Split Realities

Written 7th April

Ok, so I have been thinking this for awhile and I believe last night confirms it. For anyone who has read Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, the two timelines of lost right now are very similar to what happens to Jake and Roland after Jake dies/doesn’t die.
For those of you who have not read The Dark Tower (this may get complicated and also contain some Dark Tower spoilers): In the first book, the hero Roland meets a boy named Jake in the desert. Jake (who existed in our reality) had been pushed in front of a subway and when he died he was transported to Roland’s reality. Towards the end of the first book Jake dies in Roland’s reality as well. In the second book, Roland spends some time travelling back and forth between his and our realities (and time) and eventually kills the man who pushes Jake in front of the subway. This causes a split in realities and both Roland’s and Jake’s minds; Jake did die, Jake didn’t die. Basically, the two are driven to the brink of insanity until Jake finds a way to “course correct” and travel through to Rolands reality where the two timelines merge and sanity is restored.
This is almost exactly like what is happening to the losties only they are not aware of it yet. The Jughead detonation worked, prevented them from crashing (course correcting some past events as well) which means they never go back to the 70’s and never detonate Jughead in the first place. This caused a split reality where both timelines exist but will eventually drive everyone crazy if they are not merged, which is what Desmond is trying to do. Make sense? Thoughts?

  1. Yes, this and other similarities between Lost and King’s works have been discussed for some time. They seem to borrow particularly from The Stand and The Dark Tower.
