Pilot – anyone else notice the thing laying next to Jack on the ground?

There is a black metallic cylindrical thing next to Jack’s face and the camera is making a point to see it. Then he snaps his head to the exact location of it.. but looks at the dog instead.

Did they ever say what that was, looks like it could be a flashlight?
