What is dead?

How can someone live on an island for 13 years and not know what death is? Especially as in the next scene, they are hunting for food.
Also, I re-watched season 1 episode 6, Jack says that the bodies have been there for 30-50 years (or close to that). Is this just Jack’s mistake because surely the “people” on the island would not be so primative.
jack may be a doctor but it does not mean he would have any clue how long they have been there without dating test and so forth. it was just a guess he made
