Last of Lost: The Final Theory

As this is the last week of Lost, I wanted to post one final writing… much like everyone else. This isn’t going to be a well thought out writing…it’s going to be some random thoughts I’ve had about the show.

First of all–I’m not one of those people who want every question answered. I’m pretty happy with most of the answers we’ve been given. And I think just as Jacob’s mother said “every question I answer will only lead to another question.” And just as Evangeline Lilly has said, I believe the point of the show is to ask questions, so that the viewer can find a way to answer them themselves. To–get–people–thinking. This is brilliant.

I believe that all great writing has one main theme: everything ends as it begins. Usually, a story has to make a full 360, the only difference being when we come back around we’ve learned something and we’ve changed. Most of our characters have changed their lives for the better because of the island. Jack accepts he can’t fix everything, Kate does something selfless, Jin and Sun better their relationship, Sawyer over comes “Sawyer” and is able to be James, and on and on.

Because I don’t understand science fiction as well as I understand writing, I can’t really predict how the story will end, but I can understand where it’s going…. This is my prediction…

Jack is the candidate. The candidate is to replace Jacob. Something will happen to where Jack will be UNABLE to replace Jacob (maybe he dies, maybe he can’t leave Kate). I believe that Jack will think of a better idea (I’m not really sure what), but something along the lines of the bomb exploding. I also believe that Desmond’s ability to withstand the electromagnetism will have a huge part in this plan. He’ll be given an opportunity to correct–not change, because we know from Ms. Hawking that the past can not be changed–what has happened.

Because of this and because of our beloved characters, we see that MIB isn’t entirely correct in his reasoning that all men are “bad”. Here Jacob proves MIB wrong. Does he win the game? We don’t know because we don’t know what they are playing. We get a clue from “Across the Sea” when Jacob and MIB are playing with the black and white stones, MIB tells Jacob “One day you can make up your own games and everyone will have to play by your rules.”

Maybe once our Oceanic survivors prove MIB wrong, Jacob will win and they will all be free–which is the sideways flashes. Then, the island will no longer need to exist and MIB simply seizes to exist. Therefore, Jack doesn’t need to stay on the island and replace Jacob. In the flash sideways our characters are beginning to remember the island (and each other) which is a way of explaining deja vu, love at first sight, etc.

In the end, I believe that what we’ll have is our characters living out their lives, not if they never came to the island, but if they came to the island and became better for it.
The final scene is extremely hard to predict but I’ll give it a go…Jack and Locke playing backgammon. No, not seriously…. I believe some how it’s going to be something we already saw… just slightly changed. Something like, Jack’s eye closing.
