Why there were pregnancy issues….

Many people have obviously been disappointed by the lack of answers but I think I have come up with at least a logical explanation for the pregnancy issues on the island. For me the most logical explanation for this problem is because MIB and Jacob were born on the island and their real mother was killed, so I look at it as since MIB is “evil” he made it so that all mothers died when giving birth, kinda like a “if I can’t have a mother you can’t either” kinda deal. I think that if this isn’t the answer, then it’s something along these lines. I don’t know maybe I’m crazy but that’s how I look at it, what do you guys think?

  1. But why is it that only babies conceived on the island could not be born? Claire was able to give birth because she conceived the baby off of the Island. The same with Jacob and MIB’s real mother. Someone in the Dharma Initiative also gave birth during the 70’s when Juliet and Sawyer were living there.

  2. Claire gave birth because Jacob probably touched her, even though we didn’t see her name on the cave. But it does explain why she could give birth. I don’t know why dharma people could. It deffinitely deals with the birth of Jacob, and I bet that when he put the light out a women could have given birth just like MIB could have died.

  3. I challenge everyone, to look at the information that was given throughout the show and the ending that we received (yes, the ending is key) and then tell me that this question has not been answered?

They didn’t deliver it to us on a silver platter and say, “here is the answer,” but yes, the answer to this question is there!

  4. elsewhere – I hereby give you permission to call me a complete dumbass. I’m not asking for a direct answer, but if you could specify just a little more, or just drop a hint. Perhaps I simply missed something that’s throwing me off, which would negate me being a complete dumbass, but you know what I’m saying.

I’m really hoping you know something, because it would truly be great to know that the writers gave us an answer, especially if it’s one that’s hard to find.

  6. My bet is that the detonation of the bomb in the incident made pregnancy difficult due to the radiation or maybe the electromagnetism liberated.

After 30 years those effects started to disipate and Claire was able to give birth to Aaron.

  7. I wish I knew from where these women came. We know there were none when Alpbert arrived and Ben said he brought most of the others there.

I’m going with … long term exposure to the island’s electromagnetic property negatively effected women’s immune system, (Juliet says it turns on the baby). The first trigger is island conception and the 2nd the baby’s development (ex. kidneys function by wk 12 and excretions would get in amniotic fluid, pass through placenta and allow for immune response).

    From the show:
    1) Unless Richard lied to Juliet, young women have old uterus.

    2) Juliet describes, “The problem occurs somewhere during the second trimester, when the mother’s immune system is triggered. The white blood cell count plummets. It’s like the … immune system turns on the fetus*” but it must be early, like: 12 wks normal, 13th sick, 14th shortness of breath, 15th coma, 16th+ death. (*Note: She says the baby dies because the mother dies, but gives no indication of fetal distress despite having at least an ultrasound to monitor it. Odd.)

    3) Native women can conceive on island – but IF they do they will die. (Juliet believes if conceived OFF island you won’t.) Non-native women can conceive, carry, and give birth on the island. (Note: Dharma usually sent the women off island to give birth … but that was past the 2-3 trimester cusp of death.)

    From real life:

    1) As shown by the 70-yr old lady who gave birth to twins a coupla’ years back, shriveled uterus can still carry babies to term, so this alone does not stop pregnancy/birth.

    2) Rh- factor is an immune response to a baby, but does not kill the mother. They build up antibodies against that blood-type.

    Auto-immune diseases attack self.

    3) Electromagnetic fields disturbe the immune system. Short example: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19398310

While looking up something for this I also found http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/4253942

  8. -So as a molecular biology and genetics student my opinion is if there is a radiation or a magnetic field that affect fertility, it would affect a lot of other systems in the body of different people . And i have a funny question : we know that native women can conceive on island – but IF they do they will die. So how could the pigs that made Sawyer crazy born ? Maybe the mother pig got dirty off the island 😉
