What is the light

Well the time has come for me to pop my cherry and post a theory.

I have been thinking about the light and what it could be. Mother says that this light is in every person and when it goes out here, it goes out every where. It sounds a lot to me like the light is man’s knowledge or consciousness (self aware or whatever it is called) that makes us so different from any other species. The idea that we consciously know the difference from right and wrong.

I hate to get Biblical but in the Bible when Eve eats the apple off of the tree in the centre of the Garden of Eden it is said she becomes knowledgeable like the gods. She is all of a sudden aware of all deeper meanings and is no longer frolicking around Eden in her birthday suit (Bleeek for Adam).

I believe Mother kept Jacob and his brother seperate from the others to ensure that they would remain like Eve before she ate the apple, innocent, clean sleight or ‘Tabula Rasa’. Like she says….Jacob doesn’t know how to lie…why because he has never had the light in him or metaphorically speaking…eaten the fruit of knowledge.

I think MIB is ‘special’ because even though he, like Jacob has never eaten the fruit or ‘light’ BUT he still somehow has the knowledge…he knows how to lie and what it is etc……that is why he is special.

What it all means though is anyone’s guess.

  1. I, for one, was just happy it wasn’t a golden alien, a la Indiana Jones. Jacob came off positively slack jawed in my opinion. I think it was supposed to come off as “innocent”, but yeah….I don’t know.

  2. I’d be happy with the light being something biblical at this point. If it’s just something magical then it really holds no merit, as most things on lost have a tiny bit of scientific explanation (minus the smoke monster). That being said I definitely think it could be either the tree of knowledge or the fountain of youth. Although the fountain isn’t biblical, it definitely makes sense to “mother’s” quote and that would explain why MIB became the invincible smoke monster. Similarly, the black smoke can resemble the darkness associated with greed for immortality. And this is all because Jacob is a whiny mama’s boy.
