The 2007 DHARMA Building

I mentioned this in a comment on another post and quickly convinced myself that I was onto something from there… People have been asking why there would be a DHARMA building left in 2007 with pictures still hanging on the wall… Seems unlikely that the Others would leave them there…

The building is another incarnation of Jacobs Cabin. That’s why Christian is in there… also, the Lostpedia theories page for this episode (http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Namaste/Theories#Why_are_the_barracks_not_like_they_were_in_the_future.3F) there are pictures of someone sitting in the background during this scene… probably Claire.

  1. Sorry for the short post, bereft of detail. I was typing it with this feeling like someone else was typing up the exact same theory and I wanted to get it out before they did.

  2. I like this idea. The best I have been able to come up with so far is that is another group of buildings separate from New Otherton that we haven’t seen in 2007 yet.

  3. Competitive aren’t we? 🙂

Good post. Will look it up.

As far as I know this building is the Greeting center seen in ‘The Man Behind The Curtain’ (season three). These are the only two episodes in the series we see this building in. In Namaste they obviously use that building twice (once in the 1970s when Jack arrives) and in 2007. Probably being economical with their budget. They have the FX for the 316 crash in the same episode to pay for.

If any of the Dharma buildings have anything to do with Jacob’s cabin I would say it is the boat house that Locke keeps Miles in. I cannot figure out where the boathouse would be in the village if it is not right next to the visitor Greetings Center.

Somehow I have no problem with the Others leaving the pictures up as a sort of reminder of what the enemy was like.

  4. This was just like in “The Shining” with Jack Nicholson – remember the last shot where Jack is in the 1920s photograph with all his “friends”? i feel this was a nod to that great movie!
I assumed this was the bombed out New Otherton!
Sun and Jin, so close, but oh so far from each other!

  5. It just seems really unlikely that they would.

I always thought that the boat house looked a lot like the cabin. At any rate, Jacobs cabin was borrowed from Horace of the DHARMA Initiative so there is some presidence for Jacob taking these kinds of things from DHARMA.

  6. I took at look at the image which says “Claire?” and I am fairly certain it isn’t Claire – it’s Charlotte.

In any case, I can buy that the Others didn’t go back to the Barracks after Ben left, thus they have been abandoned for some time. I do not think they are necessarily in the Rec Room, and if they are not, it would negate the issue of Lostie prisoners seeings it. If the picture now includes people it did not when Losties were held prisoner, then it is further evidence that the show is taking a Back to the Future stance on time Travel, thus that the past can be changed.

  7. highbrow, I am not sure if you are saying the building they were in, IS Jacob’s cabin transformed to appear in ‘Otherton’ village. Because it doesn’t look like it from the outside or the inside.

I agree with sohrshah. The group pictures of Dharma with ‘the losties’ included, indicates that time is not running in a linear fashion.

  8. Is this going to be the next big argument? Even if it is just a building in Otherton, how would the pictures indicated anything about the timeline? Show me the 1993 DHARMA photo and I’ll agree with you…

  9. highbrow, I do not engage in arguments! I only engage in, intelligent discussion and/or debate.

I expressed an opinion, it’s as simple as that. I’ll happily leave you to it!

  10. Let’s have a group hug!

It was my impression that there are two buildings features in episode 9. The Cabin – either literally jacob’s cabin or another building housing Christian as the cabin did, and I’m not certain the difference has merit, and also the room where the photographs are hung. I am not positive that the second room was the rec room, but it did seem to share qualities with the rec room, so were are returned to wondering how Locke and Kate managed to miss the 1977 picture. Maybe the artifact wasn’t there was and was produced by the Monster or Jacob, or maybe it was there and this isn’t the rec room.

  11. Wanted to add something in quickly. I was just skimming through the episode, and in the scene where the welcome video is being played, there are clearly pictures hanging on a wall (someone is even looking at them) and – I watch the episodes on a laptop, so it’s no HD TV – but the photos look as if they are extremely similar to the ones we see in the Christian/Sun/Lapidus scene: a a group of people standing on grass in the daylight.

  12. Thanks. Just wanted to add that I watched a little more, and the pictures of the DHARMA recruits were definitely at one point in the welcome centre cabin.

  13. Oh, and by the way, the building that Christian leads Sun and Lapidus into is the place where DHARMA members get their jumpsuits etc. The walls are the same material, the wall with the pictures is in the exact same place, and they are relatively the same size, the door is in the same place… the windows are in the same place…

  14. Maybe the others that were left behind by Ben came in, trashed the place and boarded up the windows i guess. Although we’ve seen how the otheres live, and they live clean and tidy while in the barracks…..

Maybe the losties have changed the future.

  15. we saw the barracks when the losties left it in the end of 2004, and it definatly didn’t look like that. So some how they got boarded up, trashed and dirty as hell. Even the dock Sun and Lipidus walk along looked different. Wasn’t that blown up by Locke anyway??

  16. The pictures in the background …i dont know what to take out of it…i just watched that part of hte episode again and can clearly see someone now but it doesnt look like claire or charlotte or anyone we know.

And the room had a sign in it that said…assignment

  17. with regards to the the building being boarded up, the purge ensured the Dharma were no more so no more recruits, thats why it was boarded up. Maybe it was after smokie/keamy destroyed the place with gunfire and grenades etc? seems like theres an easier solution here than people are making out.

  18. Has this thought already been discussed somewhere? …

…That if these pictures did exist in 1977 and somehow we end up following a non-interrupted timeline into 2004, then there is a DHARMA picture with Jack, Kate, Hurley (and one probably of Sawyer) that finds its way into Ben’s hands in 2004, with our 815 crash.

To me, that is either stating the obvious as it relates to them being taken captive by the Others way back in Season 2 OR it reopens the discussion about changing the future and whatnot and I’m not really trying to bring that up…I’m just saying, this particular scenario/clue is interesting for a few reasons.

  19. I always wondered how Ben knew so much about the losties…

And I thought it interesting that Jack, Hurley, Kate and Sawyer were asked for Michael to bring to the Other’s camp, coincidently all of whom worked for DHARMA “back in the day” But then again Jin and possibly Sayid were there too.

  20. But we found out why Ben had those 4 on “the list”. Jack was the doctor, Kate adn Sawyer were there to help ensure that teh doctor did the surgery, and Hurley was brought so he would go back to camp and warn the other losties to stay away.

Are we assuming this was a lie?
