Christian the Constant

I was commenting on the post about “Ben’s Knowledge” and decided to open up something for discussion. I believe AES brought this up a couple of weeks ago, looking for Christian ‘connections’ and sorts. I think he needs to be brought up again.

From what we have seen this season and at the end of last, is that Christian has a direct link to Jacob. Since I trust basically no one on the show, I don’t even trust that this could be 100% true.

My point for discussion is this: Christian has been the character who has been the most influential between the time period. (Yes, we’ve seen ‘ageless’ Richard, but I’m talking influential‘)

Christian in 2004:
– Finds and woos Claire away from Sawyer, Jin AND her son(!!!)
– Was in Jacob’s Cabin, tells Locke to move the island AND that he could speak on Jacob’s behalf.
– A few months prior, the vision of Christian led Jack to water.

Christian in 19___ (I forget at the moment!) in the well:
– Tells Locke to turn the wheel to realign the island
– Knows that “sacrifice” is required to fulfill greater purposes
– Tells Locke to say hello to his son, not exactly a throwaway statement…

Christian in 2007:
– In post-Dharma-post-Otherton room – an interesting choice for location since he is occupying a space that apparently both ‘sides’ have occupied
– Tells Sun she has a long journey ahead of her, again revealing knowledge of what is required/needed for fulfillment of some future event (like Locke and sacrifice)
– Reveals that he knew exactly what year her husband/friends were in.

Other Christian bits to throw out there?

I have a foggy memory to how he made his grand arrival back when Carole Littleton was hospitalized and he showed up, possibly meeting Claire for the first time. What did he do? Pay all the bills? Hmmm…

Anyway…we know Christian is important. I think we are seeing his knowledge, his relationships influence the course of events – past, present and future. What else can we tie to him and what else, where else, when else will he show up?

  1. This is fantastic. People need to understand, Christian is not just about him and Jack. For the love, he was on the boat and released Michael from the islands work. Ana Lucis, Claire, Sawyer, who knows if anyone else!
He is someone important, I dont think Jacob, but someone important to many, if not all of the survivors.
Nice post, much better than my own I might add.

  2. YES. That’s right. He appeared on the freighter to Michael.

And he made some lovely appearances to Jackie boy at the hospital and such.

    Good reminders AES.

    And thanks, too!

  3. kimberly, great post and great thoughts! I don’t know how anyone could downplay Christian’s role at this point!

If any human being could be representative of Jacob, it would be him!

I think he encompasses all that IS Jacob!

  4. I want to just throw this out and see if any one else shared my thought.

Could christian been a sacrifice? Was christian once alive on the island before?

Was it a way to get Jack on the plane the first time “crash”? So was is by chance or all part of the big plot. as well jacks sister Claire? she was guided to go?

Its just a thought, but he some what alive like “Locke” is know?

finally what is with Ben being all beat up again. i had noticed the pay phone he was on a dock. did he possibly kill Charles daughter?? for revenge an eye for eye??

  5. Yeah, Christian is huge. He’s definitely central to the plot and does seem to be associated with a lot of the Losties (maybe all of them).

I think the time when Christian appeared to Locke down at the bottom of the well was not a 19xx time… I think it was much earlier than that.

And the “Say hello to my son” line was definitely not a throwaway statment. For Locke it convinced Jack… for us it confirmed that we’re actually seeing Christian and not just the image of Christian…

  6. I do agree that Christian is very important to Jacob as his representative to the Losties. Perhaps Ben’s troubles began when Christian died. The cancer that ate away Christian’s life marked the end of Ben’s reign as well.

I think, however, that in terms of time travel and constants as described by Daniel and shown to work between he and Desmond as well as Desmond and Penny, Richard is a prime candidate for being Jacob’s constant or the Island’s constant. Christian’s role is very different. There is definitely something to be said for the choice to reanimate Christian as a PR rep, rather than Yemi, who we knew to be a good man. Christian was…human.

Does anyone remember the BS line he told Jack as a child, alluding to leadership? Maybe it was a clue?

  7. To me, the effect we have with Christian is similar to what we received from the Others.

With the Others, at first we see that they “take” losties. We see this creepy Ethan who apparently has super strength, and we think that the Others are not human. Only to find out the are indeed normal people.

With Christian, for the longest time he has come off as this mysterious character, always knowing what’s going on, when off the island, he is normal. I think there is a simple explanation behind Christian that we will eventually find out.

  8. Sin – no problem on joining in the discussion, I think there are always new people reading, and I don’t mind things being said again that haven’t been said in a little while.

Highbrow, I for some reason was thinking that since Charlotte knew of the well, that it meant that it was the 1900s. Please do correct me if I’m wrong on that. It’s not a big deal…you got my point anyway!

Sohrshah – I know I used the word “constant” and on Lost, this obviously has significant meaning. I was actually using it another way, alluding to Christian having an ability to be in various time periods, with quite a bit of knowledge of what has happened/will happen…it really wasn’t meant to be the same as Desmond/Penny. There isn’t enough proof of that yet, but I’m also not throwing it out completely.
