Was the island trying to rid itself of Ben

Twice we’ve seen Ben almost die: 1st with the tumour and 2nd when Sayid shot him.

Was the island trying to rid itself of Ben whilst the true leader whether it be Jack or Locke was on the island? Nothing happened to Ben whilst he was growing up (working from season 1) as soon as the 815 crashed he gets a tumour. In 77 he got shot also when the 06(5) were on the island living in Dharma days. In between these events he’s fine but when the leaders elect return it seems as if the island is seizing the opportunity to get itself a new master by trying to snuff Ben.

Maybe the island wants Locke, Jack etc to take over the mantle. It’s possible that the Island/Jacob doesn’t deem any of ‘the others’ good enough to depose Ben, so he’s just a proxy
🙂 for the time being.

Im just throwing thoughts out there, i prefer to ask questions than post theories. Look forward to your feedback folks

  1. hey. im pretty sure he got the tumor right before the plane landed, according to his own story to jack. “2 days after i find out i have a tumor on my spine a spinal surgeon falls out of the sky” or something like that. but i guess we will see next week as he will supposedly be judged by the island

  2. agreed highbrow. whatever purpose ben will serve for the rest of the show will be quite interesting. i have a feeling he’s going to have some kind of spiritual coming of age after next week’s episode (if you watch the previews you will see what i’m referring to) ben may end up rejecting the island and stop serving it.

  3. yeah i agree with highbrow.and ben is alive for a reason. I find that even though Ben is a great manipulator, i believe the island is the master manipulator and is using ben for its own purpose(s). Whether it is trying to snuff him, or even save him. there could be 2 opposing forces? one trying to kill Ben and the other trying to keep him alive for unknown reasons. Cos even though Ben gets a tumour, there is also hope of saviour – Jack, Was it the island? destiny? another force? Something wanted Jack on island. This is also the case with ben when he gets shot, where the outcome can swing both ways and is obviously very important in the plot.
i have a whole theory on this but there is too many factors and outcomes that it is very difficult to put them down straight.

  4. It seems like Ben has to answer for something. What does everyone think it is? Was Locke supposed to kill himself and not be killed. Did he kill someone he wasn’t supposed to? Penny? I think we’re finally gonna see Des’ face again this coming episode. Is it the island judging or jacob. Is there a difference…?

  5. Agreed the (island,Jacob or black smoke) will do what it wants with Ben.

Ben has been over stepping Locke and what the island has asked of Locke! i do know there is a lot of power struggles and they (Ben) all hate being knocked of there pedestals.
