Summary of Some Like It Hoth

What a great episode! I’m a Miles fan so I thought it was pretty cool to get a Miles-centric episode.

What did we learn? Well, we were privy to more Miles-Hurley past changing antics. Apparently Hurley believes he can change the past so he’s the one who writes Empire Strikes Back. It does kind of make sense that someone like Hurley would have written that once since it’s the worst in the trilogy. So long as he doesn’t touch Jedi I’m ok with it. Seems the writers though are more determined than we are to keep the Whatever Happened, Happened / Whatever Happened Didn’t Necessarily Happen debate raging on’ We admitted a stalemate weeks ago. So they bring it up again but still give us absolutely no evidence one way or the other. What a bunch of trolls!

Miles comes clean to Hurley about his ability to talk to the dead. Oh, and Miles was a punk. I sooooo saw that coming! We’re led to believe that he and his mom were betrayed and abandoned by his father, who is confirmed to be Dr. chang. I felt sympathetic to them because every time we see Chang he seems angry’ so I kind of could see him being a jerk and telling them to leave. Then we see though that he was a loving father. It’s obvious he sent Miles and mom away from the island to protect them. I’ll bet all of the children were sent off the island. That’s why we don’t see any dead in the purge. Mayhaps’ mayhaps’ mayhaps the children were starting to disappear’ abducted by the Others’ Could that be how Ethan came to be one of them? I wonder who else’

3.2 million dollars is finally brought up again. Here’s what I took from that conversation in the van. Miles mentions 3.2 million dollars to this guy stating that he’ll need that much (double what Widmore offered) to stay away from the island. What he gets in response was some hippy nonsense about the hole in his soul’ Remember way back when Miles demanded 3.2 million from Ben? From Miles point of view he was asking for 3.2 million for the second time when he confronted Ben with it. He was looking for Ben to spew hippy drivel. Ben did not. Ben is not aligned with Ilana and Bram. Neither is Widmore obviously (unless this is a really complicated ploy by Widmore to get Miles to do something he already agreed to do). Enter some third party. Enter, The Economist. Hanso? I think so. The Economist is on the DHARMA Initiative side and is on a mission to reconstitute his team on the island. Unfortunately, this works directly against my Widmore, hippies, hostiles, chubby chick theory which I now, at least in part, retract.

We also learned that Hurley is not responsible for the origin of the numbers. I read in another theory that the numbers were a serial number but was that really what they called it in the episode? Why would they put a serial number on the hatch? They put those numbers there for some reason and it seems that it wasn’t because Hurley told them that the numbers were special.

Jack and Kate are both idiots. They have come to the past on a mission to destroy everything through stupidity. Oh, and they’re both pregnant.

Summary:
Miles: getting happier, crazy hair, piercings, biatch mother, nice father, talks to the dead.
Hurley: crazy, huge, likes mayo with garlic, didn’t invent the numbers, hates Ewoks, plays chess with the dead.
Jack: dumb, huge ego.
Kate: dumb, huge shoulders.
Ilana: DHARMA, chubby.
Bram: DHARMA, hippy.
Widmore: Rich, angry.

  1. So about that “100% right comment” that you left for yourself yesterday….pretty funny…

Explain how we know FOR SURE that Ben doesn’t have any ties to this “What lies in the shadow of the statue crew?”

I’m definitely not against reintroducing Hanso or a ‘new’ Dharma…I just want to know your 100% “it’s not Ben” line of thinking… 🙂

  2. Which part was I 100% sure of? I’ll have to go back and see… I think it was my purge theory which is still completely valid.

You’re right. We don’t know for sure that Ben has nothing to do with the Statues Shadow people… that’s just speculation on my part.

  3. I agree, at this point I think Ilana and Bram are working for a third party. Hanso -DI – Ann Arbor.

But kim and dabs could be completely right, she works for Ben, but I don’t think so. She seems to have an objective other then helping Ben get his shit done.

  4. Yes, your purge theory, but also over on your “Chuck … Chubby Chick” theory. 😉
it’s the one you mentioned in this theory…the timing was just funny for you to yesterday say, “this is it? Guess I’m 100% right…” only to have to on the next day write a new theory possibly discounting part of that theory. Am I the only one finding humor in that? It happens to me all the time…

They just can’t keep bouncing back and forth now (week to week) as much since in “SLIH” they referenced the same line…they have to have an episode coming where we get to see Locke, Ben, Ilana, Bram, Sun, etc. AND Miles, Jack, Kate, Sawyer, etc. … Sounds like the Incident is coming?

  5. The incident is definitely coming…

Kim, yeah that was sarcasm. I was trying to get some more conversation going on that post… it had fallen off the home page.

My purge theory is unassailable. My Widmore-DHARMA theory, not so much. I still maintain that Ilana is chubby though.

  6. Yeah. When the 3.2 million dollars thing first came up the bearings to leave and approach the island was a big deal. That has kind of faded into the background at this point but here we’re presented with the figure again, 3.2 million. I really believe that the purpose is for us to compare and contrast the reaction of Ben with the reaction of Bram when they hear this demand.

I could be wrong though. Could still be the bearing.

  7. kittycarson, 1.6 million was the amount Widmore offered Miles to get on board ‘the freighter’. Miles was asking for double the amount from Bram and Ben when he first met him. He was only interested in the $$$$.

  8. highbrow, how can we be so sure Ilana & Bram have no ties to Ben?

Joshcgs, Ben has many contacts on the outside world. How can we be so certain who Ilana is working for? If she is not working for Widmore, that leaves Ben. Ben all but gave her a knowing glance.

After what we have learned about Ben, with his willingness to be judged by the smoke monster, he has a reason for being back on ‘the island’.

Richard replaced him as the leader of ‘the others’.

All I am saying is, expect a twist!

  9. True… and Hurley did have a bunch of sandwhiches… Not sure I’d want to eat them now knowing that they’d been stored in the back of the van with a dead guy…

  10. highbrow, yes you did say you were speculating. No problem with that! I just would not underestimate Ben! That’s all I am saying.

…..getting back to your shoulder envy of Kate……I am surprised you have never made mention of her ‘boyish’ hips! lol

  11. I’ve never noticed her hips… always been distracted by her shoulders… those will probably be a problem when she gives birth to Hurley! Oh! There’s your twist!

I’m definitely not underestimating Ben. There are three sides and Ben is a big player on one of them (the Others, led now by John Locke). I just think that the whole 3.2 million thing was there to help us differentiate between those sides.

Also, I was reading the Lostpedia entry for Bram and was reminded that Bram offered Miles answers about his father and who would know better about Dr. Chang than the DHARMA Initiative?

  12. Ok, now that I’ve gone back and looked at them, you’re right Dabs! She has smaller hips than I do! Good Lord, what an unusual woman… It’s got to be a clue… Kate is a dude! Jack is pregnnat and Kate is the daddy!

  13. Ooooo …. I can’t believe it …. You forgot something else often debated resolved … apparently you can be on the island 2x and see yourself since Miles saw his daddy speaking w/himself as a baby.

Also, DHARMA seems less innocent w/each episode ‘eh?

  14. Yeah, DHARMA was definitely into places on the island they shouldn’t have been in…

The issue with being on the island twice at the same time has been debated a bit but I thought that it had already been debunked…

  15. Me too – but peoples kept sayin’ ‘maybe they can if they’re dead’ – and I don’t think Miles is dead (unless someone’s gonna’ say he died and was resurrected on the island *wink*).

  16. Oh Highbrow, I know it was sarcasm, because I was offering you a bit of my own. 🙂

Yes, I noticed the reference to her shoulders, and I think I even referenced them over on AES post today. That grey t-shirt she’s wearing makes her look all the more military, man-ish.

You know all those Chuck Norris jokes? You could write a “fun” theory about all the problems Kate will solve by employing the beastly power of her arms. Your thought on her picking up Desmond’s boat and throwing him to the island is still the best.

    Okay…anyway…this was a serious tangent.

I’ll make my more thoughtful statement in another comment…

  17. Yeah, I bet Chuck Norris jokes are just as funny if you change Chuck Norris to Kate’s Shoulders. We should probably go ahead and do that… I vaguely remember some story several months ago about Chuck Norris and I think I was supposed to hate him after hearing that…

  18. I thought there was some very tricky writing last night in some of the things mentioned, and some of the things left out.

Was I the only one expecting Bram to say something along the lines of “you want answers about your father?” since Naomi didn’t mention it.

I liked that Naomi’s ‘reason’ was that they were hunting Ben down and given all the dead people, Miles could help find out information. That was fine and all.

But given that Miles mother delivered her line (about where to find Chang’s grave) “He’s somewhere you’ll never find…” (or something like that) – it was sinister! – and then that particular bit of information about WHO Miles is isn’t even brought up?

Ben or Widmore have to know that somehow, don’t you think? Especially if it’s possible that Widmore is connected to DHARMA.

Obviously, there is so much more to the Ilana and Bram backstory…

…and maybe Miles is the only one that figured out that Chang is his dad. Somehow, I just don’t buy it.

  19. Well, Ben might have known but hasn’t let on. Bram seems to know. Widmore might know too. Miles definitely knows and now that Hurley knows it’ll be all over the island in no time. I liked how Miles found out too… “my mother stood behind me in line in the cafeteria” or whatever he said… funny. But that seems to work against the “way it works” for Miles…

  20. LOL! Nice, how am I supposed to explain this to the people who are hearing me crack up from my office…?

So yes, Chuck Norris jokes do work. But eventually you will need to write a theory, and sound COMPLETELY serious, and start solving things like what the island is, how it skips through time, how the timelines will be reconciled, what happens to Ben and Widmore, explain the incident, and that the plane crash wasn’t caused by electromagnetism but because Kate stretched her arms…

  21. I have my own explanations for most of those things… Yes, Kate can be blamed for most of this. Maybe I will write a totally serious run-down of my theoretical explaination for all of the islands mysteries that I have an explaination for… that would be one long theory though! And my natural style of writing and speaking is to attempt to inject a bit of humor, even when I’m being serious… so it’s hard to tell sometimes when I’m joking…

As for your co-workers… I don’t know… point at the guy next to you and tell everyone he farted.

  22. I just wanted to add that I thought it was interesting during the Jack/Roger scene in the classroom, that on the board was information about Egyptian times. Just another reference that Egypt and the Island are connected.

Also, I wanted to give my two cents on Ilana and Bram:
So we know almost 100% that Widmore is NOT their employer. And we can think that Ben is not either based on the fact that even in private him, Bram and Ilana seemed to just be strangers to each other. The look on the plane that Ben gave was at Sayid, not Ilana. He was astounded that Sayid managed to get on the plane.

So this leaves me with a few questions:

Who is Ilana and Bram’s employer?
    – Someone who knows of the island
    – Someone who knows of the statue, and whatever “lies beneath it”
    – Someone who knows Sayid, and *maybe* what he has been doing off the island.

Does Ilana know she is going to the island on Ajira 316?
    – She was set on 316 when Sayid asked to wait for the next one.

If Ilana does know she is going to the island on Ajira 316…
    – Why does her employer want Sayid on the island?

  23. I was just asking myself that question when reading the post about Kate being pregnant and recreating the conditions of the flight. What is Ilana’s purpose with Sayid? Maybe just to get on the flight. Somehow she knew that everyone was getting on the plane to go back to the island, that much is obvious. Eloise, anyone? After all, it only makes sense that she would be a contender for the third power. DI Ann Arbor is still a valid theory, and I’m just throwing things out there, but maybe she’s really working for DI Ann Arbor? Eloise sold them out to the Economist!
