Jacob or MIB?

We found out in season 2 that Ben was the Other’s leader, but his orders were coming from somebody above him. Considering the Others actions, such as kidnapping Claire, attempting to kill Charlie, killing 2 of their own and kidnapping many Losties, we could think that the person delivering the orders to Ben must be evil…

So what if it wasnt Jacob giving the orders, what if it was the MIB? We know that MIB is the “evil” one, and the Others actions, including many of Ben’s have been very evil.

Perhaps this is why people couldnt see Jacob in his cabin, because he was never there, it was the MIB.
This begs the question however, how “evil” is Richard?

If it was the MIB, we could also assume that they could have been Jacob rather than the MIB, or both (Walt telling Locke to stand up could be Jacob, while Christian taking Claire to the cabin away from Aaron could have been the MIB)

  1. I honestly couldn’t disagree more. When you say “we know that MIB is the evil one.” Who’s “we”? Just because he disagrees with Jacob and wants him dead does not mean he’s evil at all. All we know about Jacob is that he brings people to the island, where NOTHING seems to go right for anyone there, and he doesn’t care if Kate spends her whole life stealing, doesn’t care if Sawyer spends his whole life wanting revenge for his parents death, and doesn’t care if Sayid’s life long love, Nadia, gets hit by a car. Jacob made these things happen, and they are not good things in my perspective. We know nothing else really about either of these characters. MIB wears black and disagrees with Jacob. So therefore he’s evil? Seems more like MIB is a protector of the island and does NOT want everyone fighting, destroying and conquering on the island. I might be terribly wrong with all that of course, but it makes sense when you look at what we’ve seen to this point.

  2. I agree with Chiefof16… It seems like MIB saying that they come, fight, etc… that he doesn’t want other people there and Jacob seems “smug” that he can prove MIB wrong. But who knows?

I was thinking the same thing though… if this was season 3 and we met Jacob everyone would think he was evil for all the things the others did in his name. But because he was wearing a white shirt now he’s a good guy

  3. Sorry, didn’t mean to come across so negatively, there’s an individual on here that’s making this experience a little less fun than it should be and I’m lettin it piss me off a bit too much, but yeah, I’d like to know if both the MIB and Jacob are capable of the same things, such as, both being able to look like other people. If that’s the case, and you are right, it would be fun to rewatch the entire show to this point and try to point out when each of them are present

  4. I agree with Pez123, and when people carrying the John Locke coffin come to the cabin, they say : someone else has been using it. It could mean that throughout all Lost, Jacob’s orders given to Richard might just be MIB’s orders, that he could give through a dead person image such as Christian Shepard saying ‘Jacob is not available right now but I can speak on his behalf’.

  5. Chiefof16, you make a valid point. We dont “know” that the MIB is the evil one, and the “evil” one could be Jacob, but either way, one of them is evil and there is tension between the two.
And on your second comment, I know exactly what you mean. Ive had my problems with people on http://www.lost-theories.com, and part of it shutting-down was the tension between people and their comments, which were way worse than yours.

Jj23, you make a good point; and why would Jacob not be available? Sounds a bit strange to me that a leader who gives orders, and can heal people and set their destiny isn’t available at a moment of desperation (Widmore’s army guys on the island)

  6. Pez123, I like your thoughts on this!

We have seen the previous leaders of ‘the others’ (aside of Ben) do some pretty questionable things, which could be considered evil. One example is when Charles Widmore wanted both Danielle & Alex killed.

It is difficult to determine who is good and who is evil out-rightly. I believe this speaks directly to the duality of their nature. As viewers, our minds are being challenged on a regular basis to ascertain as to who is good and who is evil. It has been back and forth, since Lost begun.

This makes us question what our understanding of good and evil are. Given that ‘duality’ and the constant references to black vs white have been referenced throughout the show, I think we have to come to the conclusion that both exist in all humans. That we may not know the true answer, until we see more.

Richard Alpert has been a mystery to me, but I am not sure that he is totally evil. It’s hard to call at this juncture. He seems to have been made immortal, but we don’t know for what reason yet. I’m still not sure about him.

I think it is entirely plausible that our current perceptions of Jacob and Fake Locke, could change completely in the next season. Maybe our perceptions of what we thought about other characters will too.

    Nice post!

  7. The point is not who’s good or who’s bad. Let’s stick to what we know for sure: MIB doesn’t want anyone to come to the island, to protect its secret. Jacob seems to call people to the island to prove him wrong and to see the PROGRESS. What do the Others do? They protect the island and they don’t want to share it. They fight and even kill for that purpose thinking they are the good guys. So, who are they taking orders from? Are they doing it becuse they think it’s the only way to keep the island a secret or because they were told so? Were they deceived by the MIB? Jacob doesn’t look the guy who’s giving orders but he believes in free will.Men are given a choise to act, make mistakes, change their mind. What do you think?

  8. I dont think we KNOW all of that, but most of it we do. We dont for sure know what MIB doesn’t want people to come to the island.

I was thinking, the Other’s were never the “Others” without Ben. They were never as ‘evil’ without him, and perhaps Ben was made that evil by Jacob or MIB, because really, he couldn’t have gotten “that” evil just because of his father….

One thing I am looking forward to next season is when Fake_Locke is exposed to everyone as MIB.
