The Smoke Monster
Damon and Carlton state in one of their Dharma vids that the smoke monster was on the island before Dharma.
I think the smoke monster was the original inhabitant of the island, before anyone arrived. That means before the black rock and anything before that.
It lived in peace and roamed around the island freely before being disturbed by people landing/crashing etc. on the island. It got angry and now wants to destroy everyone on the island so that it can live in peace again.
The only problem is Dharma found a way of taming it. It still wants to destroy but can’t do as much damage as it liked because of what Dharma has done to it.
Now Ben knows how to reverse that effect – he can summon it to destroy (as we have seen with keamy and the bad men). Now that Ben has done this smokey is free to destroy what he likes.
I cant help but feel that the smoke monster is man made, or at least created by a living creature using technology. Its just those noises that it makes, they sound mechanical. I feel it adapted and evolved to a living being itself, an advanced AI, not in the cheesy movie way either.
I quite like this idea. If it is true it’ll be interesting to see what the smoke monster is up to in S5.
Sorry but I’d have to say that the Smoke Monster is future technology which has been on the island for 1000s of years. Like most of the phenomenon on the show, it symbolizes the marriage of the past and the future. Advanced technology interacting with an ancient civilization.
I don’t know if the Smoke Monster’s main aim in life is to destroy others. It had a chance to destroy Mr. Eko in Season 2’s “The 23rd Psalms” and didn’t bother.
very true DR76, also locke, there seems to be..more than meets the eye..when it comes to the monster. I believe it has a lot more to do with the islands properties, and retribution…is that the right word?
Hey folks just thought I’d throw in a thought: remember in season two when the people from the tail section first heard the smoke monster, Rose made a comment that she thought it sounded familiar..? She’s from the Bronx…
