When did Ben start looking for the O6?

He’s off the island for 3 years, during which time he’s hobbling Widmore … but is unable to ‘get’ Penny (when did Desmond take off with her in the 3-yr 0) timeline?

Then, all of a sudden he’s all ‘you have to go back to the island to save your friends’, when the friends were all safe for 3 yrs.

He clearly knew how to find everyone during for the 3 yrs.

So, why after 3 yrs? (I think he needed them to be on that flight to be safe so HE could go back to the island … so what made him think he needed to go back?

And, what triggered Locke (after 3 yrs) to suddenly decide he had to off himself and get back to the island?

  1. Well, Ben landed in Tunisia in October 2005 so he’s been off island for around 2 and a bit years.

He pretty much pursued the O6 straight away (recruiting Sayid to kill of Widmores men). He stated to Locke he’d been watching them to keep them safe.

I’m thinking he knew he could only go back to the island when Locke arrived. That’s why he didn’t try and get the group together until Locke got back.

Locke arrived off island in Tunisia in December 2007 (or around that time). When he decided to take his life, from his POV, it had only been a month or so since he left the island.

  2. I think he just recruited Sayid (by killing is wife and blaming Widmore) and since they had no value for him, didn’t care about the rest of the O6 until he knew you could get back on the island if John was dead and then went back to off Penny. (Maybe he couldn’t find her, as Charles told him so he came up with another plan. He always has a plan … )

  3. The answer is quite simple. If Ben had of asked the ’06’ to return to ‘the island’, they would have likely killed him, for the mere suggestion. As it was, Locke had no success until he killed himself.

Ben had a plan before he pushed the FDW, and he knew how to get back to ‘the island. He also KNEW in advance to have Richard tell Locke to turn the wheel, in addition that he would have to die, to get the ’06’ to return.

The time Ben spent on the outside world, was to rid himself of some of his enemies on Widmore’s side. Ben was unable to locate Penny, because she and Desmond, were on the sailboat in an undisclosed location of the world, until Desmond showed up at Ms. Hawking’s LA location.

Once Ben had Locke and then killed him, knew where to find Ms. Hawking, he knew he could convince the ’06’ to return. He then coordinated from there. And, voila!
