I want him to WANT to do it!

Long time reader but first time poster but I think this thought/theory will be short lived so wanted to get it out there sooner rather than later!

With all the speculation about young Ben dying or living and the apparent consequences from what we think we know of the show (time loop, can’t change the future etc), I suddenly recalled a line delivered back in Season 3 (episode 5 or 6 i think). Juliet is talking to Ben about forcing Jack to operate on his tumour! And Ben, being his normal and calculating self says ‘I want him to want to do it!’.

  1. This is a nice thought. I like the backstory leading to Jack doing it. I always wondered what Ben told Juliet alone in the operating room as Jack and Tom looked on from behind the glass.
I still think it will be Juliet, for reasons I spoke of in my last two theories the revolve around Ben, but good logic in deciding this.

  2. I’m sure that as the next season and a half goes on there will be some real meaning into some of the one liners we have heard! “We are the good guys”, “See you in another life” and “This wasn’t supposed to happen” is going to be an interesting to pull of!!

  3. I agree totally brother_des, I too hope they will incorporate previous off-the-cuff comments into the story lines, such as the one mentioned and the “you do remember birthdays” one.

Its getting better and better this damn show!

  4. i wrote a simple theory as soon as ben was shot that jack would save ben, again. i really like the detail in this theory though even if both have the same net result. 5 out of 5!

a.e.s, what did ben whisper to jack in that operating room? “hey jack, in 1977, when you go back in time, your evil friend sayid is going to put a cap in my lungs. if you save me know, you have to save me then as well or your mean like your friend!”

  5. No no. It was Juliet Ben spoke to alone. Remeber, he wanted to speak to her without Jack there, and Jack wasnt having it. He and Tom watched through the glass…

But I dont think Jack will save Ben.

  6. Think AES has a point! Jack wont save Ben, hence the “I want him to want to do it” last time (for Ben) Jack said no! so the second time (the tumour) its important for Ben that Jack feels like he wants to do it! Either the writers have all this planned out way in advance or they tie up some loose ends very well…..George Lucas take note!!!

  7. Momma is interested in this idea.
im so desperate to find out what the incident was?? we know about the wheel but really how does it connect to the button? iv read lots about the button supposedly keeping the islande stable in the present or 108 min in the past or what have you but it all sounds loopy to me and im leaning againsed the loops theories with all my might, but i feel the weight gaining on me.

  8. If Jack does save Ben at age 12 but only because he is coerced…

Could Ben spend the rest of his life yearning to be a man worthy of being saved.

He later comes into contact with Jack and realizes what a terrible life he has led.

“I want you to want to save me” could be his way of saying “I am trying to turn over a new leaf, I really am. I want you to help me redeem my life.”

  9. When it first happend I thought maybe the bullet had something to do with the tumor. I thought maybe the tumor wasn’t a tumor at all, but maybe tissue that had grown around the bullet. This probably isn’t the case, but it was a thought.
I also think Ben wanted Jack to WANT to do it because Jack did not want to do the surgery on pre-teen Ben, and Juliet ended up doing it.
However, if you read my post on ‘theory of compossibility,’ you will see why I think Ben doesn’t die, and CANNOT die.
    nice post

  10. A spinal surgeon of Jacks caliber would know the difference…
Your point of why Ben wanted Jack to do it makes sense…
And ive read your theory, and it makes a lot of sense….
    nice work…
I agree with all… as much as I believe anything on this show…

  11. I think the reason Ben wants Jack too WANT to do it is because if Jack has chosen to save his life before he will undoubtably do it again for a younger version of him….I think Ben was just testing if he was reliable enough.

  12. Jack wasnt saving Ben for Ben, that time, he thought it would get them all off the island.
Ben knows Jacks track record. He knows he saves people that shouldnt be saved, I guess in a way.
I dont think last time has anything to do with this, Jack is a spinal surgeon, Ben had a tumor on his spine…

  13. brother_des, I like your theory! There is good logic in it.

My only question is whether or not Jack would actually hold steadfast on refusing to operate on young Ben.

I can understand why he wouldn’t want to, but it would be such a departure fro Jack. It will definitely be interesting to see how it all plays out!
