Hurley and his Hoth…Discussion…

Well, I really hate to bring up everybodys favorite word, but it seems to me, that Hurley may be foreshaodowing the possibilty that he could rewrite “Star Wars”…and again, raise the question of change. It is seriously hard for me to believe that they would continue to bring up the topic, and have Miles constantly putting Hurley down if it wasnt going to be an issue. No, I dont think Miles will be the one to do so, Hurley possibly,Joking, at least about rewriting star wars… remember, his power is ‘better’ as he puts it…lol…

So regardless, this is less of a theory, than it is yet another example of a foreshadowing event or conversation, that something is going to ‘change’ in a drastic way…and a discussion on the episode.
The thing is, young Miles, will be gone, and well…too young to remember or even know what happens. Someone, Ben most likely, is going to have to be in the past, physically or conciencely, to be able to verify the change that occures, otherwise…with the exception of the DI being wiped out, there would be nothing to actually show if a change would even take place. Even if an incident happens, who’s to say it was the same as the one originally spoke of….unless you were there before…
My moneys always been on Locke to cause the change, with the presence of Desmond Hume being necessary.
I did see something that I have been thinking about recently, but havent written about for a good reason…simply he has given no reason. He has literally nothing since arriving to the island. But tonight we saw a different Jack. The old Jack almost…dare I say, stepping up for his “..good friend Kate…”. I was impressed, kind of expected it during the course of the conversation, but impressed no less.
We were taken away from Locke and Ben for the moment, to what seemed at times slow moving, as some will put it. But I think the allusions and symbolism was reminicent to an old school Lost of sort. I enjoyed the episode, which didnt have much action, and not really any threats…well…

How about Sawer hitting that ninny Phil in his mouth…Ive been waiting for that. But of course here we are with our Bond Villan line…”Get some rope..”
I imagine Phil will escape, and tell Horace if he wasnt lying and didnt already, but I actually thinks he respects, and obviously fears Sawyer, so probably not yet. But it does appear that Sawyer knew about the people dying…Chang “Miles what are you doing here, I was expecting Lafleur.
Miles and Hurley, classic… win, lose, or draw on the whole ‘change’ issue, they make a great team for that among other humerous situations.
I loved when he was in the back and kept alluding that Miles was Changs son…”What a coincidence…”…lol, great stuff.
And welcome back Danny boy…is he the AnnArbor scientist that had Miles abducted to help on the island, could that be how he ultimatley ends up with Dan on the frieghter? Which would make him working ultimatley for Widmore anyway, no?
And who the hell was the man in the bag? Oh god, I can smell the “Jacob” theories.
I really would most of all like to know what happened to him, he may be a key ingrediant to finding an answer obout who is lying and how bad the lie really is…who the good guys and the bad guys actually are.
Ok, Im going to go find a few of my theories to rewrite when I go back in time…
Ill start with anything I have said that was negative toward the idea of ‘change’ occuring on Lost.
Believe or not, another reference to change did occure, in a very clever, fun, nerdy (Im making fun of myself too) way…with one of the most popular/best movies of all time.

Abbot Enheduanna Schwarzschild Name meaning: -Abbot: Father defined by or in religious connotation/definition. From the beginning, Lost was riddled with religious tone and it was obvious it would play some sort of role. Seemed fitting to start here. -Enheduanna: Mesopotamian High Priestess and the modern civilization’s first recorded poet. I created the name after season 1. John explaining backgammon history to Walt spawned the idea that the island may have a link yo the beginning of civilization and maybe even time itself. It was “poetic” and important to add this to my pseudonym. I needed the mother of poetry in modern civilization to match the religious “Father” in my first name. -Schwarzschild: Reference to Karl Schwarzschild and Schwarzschild Black Holes. Smoke monsters, hatches, and curing paralysis doesn’t point to black holes…but the sci-fi elements ran deep and obvious. The wheel moving the island and transporting Ben felt like it got plucked from my imagination. A.E.S.

  1. Not a whole lot to say, cuz I’ve been lurking as a guest here for weeks now…just wanted to say a big THANKS to all the major theory writers…you guys provide some AWESOME food for thought! Great episode tonight…I can just see George Lucas laughing at Skywalker Ranch.

  2. AES, I thought Hurley was really adorable writing the next episode of Star Wars for George Lucas. I love the exchanges between him and Miles.

I think what jumped out again in this episode was the element of change discussion between Hurley and Miles. Last week it was time travel. The writers appear to be drawing viewers to the ‘big reveal’ on those two elements.

We see at the end of the episode, Miles is standing outside of Chang’s house, watching him read a story to him as a baby! Quite endearing. I really felt for Miles.

I also liked when he returned to the grieving father he ripped off, and angrily told him, that he should have told his son he loved him while he was still alive!

Finally, the long standing mystery of the 3.2 million was answered. Miles was looking for anyone who would ‘ante up’ double what Widmore was offering him!

  3. yes! as soon as naomi offered him 1.6 i knew. did anyone else think that the van guy (forgot his name, illanas buddy) told miles was really corny? all that money won’t fill that whole in your heart. so cliche. hahaha. so it might seem ilana and that dude have island connections too? other dharma folk able to escape pre purge?

also… who keeps rope in their house???? i think sawyer and juliette are into some kinky stuff.

  4. ekolocation, Bram’s line was somewhat corny, but it made sense to my ‘old mind’. lol

I think Sawyer would be the kind of guy to keep ropes around the house. He seems to be a ‘just in case’ kinda guy! lol

One other thing about Faraday, that I noted was, he seemed to be fairly low key when he said hello.

I think Faraday is out to try and change something! Look out, I smell disaster! lol

The other amusing thing was Hurley’s sandwiches. I wouldn’t want to eat one of those! Yikes!

  5. This episode, I feel is looming towards the incident…I think Miles story is important to the events that are to come…
He is ‘one of a kind’ on the island right now, and Im not talking about the ability to talk to dead people.

  6. Miles, right now, is the only character, that we are aware of, that has more than one entity of himself existing on the island at the same time.

We know Chang knows that something bad occures if the two touch, we saw his reaction from the Orchid video when the second rabbit appears out of nowhere.

I think that the incident will occure, when Miles comes into contact with his past self, possibly causing some sort of anomaly most likely caused by the energy in the island reacting in a bad way to the connection.
I think that it will possibly kill Miles Straum, the adult, and give Miles Straum the baby, the power to speak to the dead…for whatever reason.
I think that it is also possible that Chang is holding the baby, or tries to grab it from Miles or wherever, and could very well be the reason he lost his arm.

This could somehow cause a surge of some kind, making it necessary to activate the swan.

This is a lot of speculation on my part, and I could be very wrong. I am just trying at the moment to peice together an explanation to why Miles has this power, and somehow explain the incident.
I still lean towrds the possibility that the giant ‘fly’-like, enclosures in the Orchid may have something to do with it.
This is more based on the info from this episode, and I am actually brainstorming another idea already in relation to the incident.

  7. AES, Great commentary as always…I thought it was kind of interesting when Hurley is encouraging Miles to speak to his dad, a la Luke & Vader and actually mentions the losing of his hand in Empire…of course in this case, it’d be Vader/Chang…just thought it was interesting…especially being a long time Star Wars fan too.

  8. I totally agree A.E.S about Miles. I was wondering about the video, when Marvin freaked out about the rabbits getting close together. I think that Miles coming in contact with his infant self is a good reason for the freak out. He knows what will happen if the rabbits have contact because he has seen it happen with his son.

  9. i dont know if that is the incident. i have a sneaking suspicion that faraday will cause the incident. now that he is back and seems to be working undercover. (remember when in the season premiere he kept his head down so chang wouldnt see him? why would that be…

  10. Good recap, AES. I’ll tell Josh over on his post, too, that he summed up the death by electromagnetism ‘dead on.’

HurleyBird – You presented the same scenario I was thinking of, as to why Chang freaks out if the rabbits come in contact. It’s because he has witnessed the repercussions in his own life, with his son.

Here’s a thought that kept popping into my head throughout, and yes, it’s about change.

I was nervous yet baffled why Miles was not confronting Hurley about Hurley’s conversation with Miles and Chang. (Not to mention all the talking during lunch break…) If Miles was REALLY concerned about disrupting the timeline, and even more importantly, blowing their cover as to who they all are, don’t you think he would have been a little more directive to Hurley?

Sure, the guy was emotional and somehow finally dealing with his father abandonment issues. But, things are very near spiraling out of control since the Losties are all there. Miles was toying with the idea of change, and I won’t be surprised if he is indeed the catalyst.

Which makes me think about Chang and change.

If Miles does somehow let on to his father that he is his son from the future…

Chang will most likely find out about future events to come…like, the Purge…

And thus send his wife and child away from the island…

  11. AES, your scenario with Miles, Pierre, and his younger self is precisely how I think he Pierre loses his arm.

This event, may be what promotes Daniel Faraday into coming clean about the time travelling issues and the effects of ‘change’.

  12. We already know that Chang finds out about the purge from the DHARMA Booth Video… Apparently though they feel they are powerless to stop it. It’s most likely that this is why Chang sends his family off island. I was happy to see Miles learn that his father really did love him after all… Then I kind of thought “what a biatch” about his mother…

The scene between Miles and Bram in the van was very significant. There is a third group involved here. Apparently I was wrong about Ilana…. she’s not with DHARMA. When Miles told the guy in the van that he wanted 3.2 million dollars to stay away the guy got all philosophical with him.. “all the money in the world won’t fill the hole in your heart” or some such nonsense. When he told Ben he wanted 3.2 million he was looking for a similar answer to confirm that the people who wanted him to stay away were Ben’s people. They aren’t. And they’re obviously not Widmore’s people. Ilana and Bram and working for a third party that we’re not completely familiar with. The Economist, I presume…

  13. Or maybe Ilana is with DHARMA but in that case Widmore isn’t. That kind of makes more sense to me based on Bram’s hippy-esque answer to the 3.2 million dollar question.

  14. So I now I think that Hanso is the economist and Ilana, Bram and who knows who else is on the island as his agents to begin reconstituting the DI…

  15. highbrow, some good thoughts here. I am not entirely sure why and under what circumstances Miles and his mother left ‘the island’.

Recall what Charlotte relayed about what her mother told her about her father.

I think something deeper happened with the families before Dharma was purged. Perhaps, there was a very good reason why they sent their families ‘packing’.

I have a theory written from last nights episode, which I will post later, that explains some of the logistics you’ve mentioned.

  16. Is she brash…or persuasive. She seduces Sayid with her ’emotions’, and plays a role of leader without a pack pf ‘others’ hiding in the bushes. She has to make people follow her, or tame the ones that wont. We saw Ricky shoot Keamy in the back when he was almost killing Sayid. He became obviously ‘upset’ with Widmore, even raising his voice. Almost chuckled at John when he told him he was from the future, and most importantly, upset when John failed his ‘test’…
I dont think she is of the same power as Richard, just from the same time.
Of course I hope I am wrong and she becomes another redhirt very quickly…
I really dont like her character, she isnt really at all threatening, and she doesnt have that pizazz that many of the popular ‘bad guys’ have on Lost…
I’ll take your side in hopes of a sooner than later death.
    ;]

  17. AES, I’ll second that on Ilana! Unless she shows us something else in her character, I’d say she is not coming across as much of a threat!

Very disappointing! Even Ana-Lucia had more of an edge to her.

Richard exudes quiet power, and I think we’ve only seen him be short and impatient. I’d really hate to see him lose it, though. I think he could prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

Perhaps, we’ll see some of those fireworks between him and Ilana!
