The numbers, the purge, bad luck, the others & 1988
The numbers … Sam Tooney … heard them over and over 16 years ago (e.g. 1988) … when Danielle arrived on the island … so, why were they broadcast over and over and for how long … . Did bad luck begin as soon as that number struck on the hatch? Was it A-OK … then the purge and then The Others found out about the bad luck? Could the purge be a result of the number’s bad luck? Did the guys in the hatch know about the purge or just keep pressing those buttons? Did the others know about them or just let them keep doing it? What’s the deal with 1988? Was this all the result of the harmonic convergence!?!
I read a theory somewhere about this and it made perfect sense to me at the time. Let me see if I can get the broad strokes of it straight.
The purpose of Dharma Initiative is to change the values of those numbers from the Valenzetti equation. the numbers are a mathematical calculation of the end of the human race or something.
To this purpose they et up a series of social and scientific experiments on the island. Theoretically, if one of the experiments bears fruit it will change the value of one of the numbers.
How do you check to see if the values have changed? You broadcast the numbers in a closed loop. The way you close the loop is by blocking the transmission (viz. the Looking glass station) so that the numbers will only be heard on the island.
In 1988 something goes wrong at the Looking Glass station (however briefly) and the transmission gets off the island.

Something I found interesting at the begining of the latest episode. When Miles’ mother is visiting the apartment to rent it, the numbers on the microwave oven are 3:16 instead of the customary 108 or 815 or combination of THE numbers.
Ant idea what that means? Are 316 and 4 and 7 and a few others going to be part of a new equation?
The Harmonic Convergence was some hippy thing in August 1987 – BUT, I found the Wikipedia reference interesting in that it mentions karma and (ya’ ready) dharma.
