Who did John see previously
Now that it’s all but confirmed, IMO, that the ‘Locke’ who tasked Ben to kill Jacob is ‘Smoke Monster’ a question arose in my head. If the Smoke Monster can take the shape and form of anyone then was it Jacob that original Locke saw in the cabin and heard say “help me”. We never saw his full face and John wouldn’t be able to ask Ben about him as its now revealed that Ben never even saw Jacob.
More evidence is when Ilana goes to the cabin and see’s the note/picture then passes it to someone else and says “he hasn’t been here for a while”. I assume that he moved to the foot of the statue and that Smokie moved into the cabin to set his plan in motion. So if we are to assume that smokie took the form of Christian and tricked Locke (cabin and FDW) into doing his bidding this means that Smokie has been planning this for a very long time indeed.
All thoughts and comments welcome

I think you are on the right track here. Which is interesting because if Smokie set the plan in play to turn the FDW, then maybe the “loophole” that Jacob and the unidentifed man talk about is timetravel itself. Just a thought.
Why would you think that the Smoke Monster is the possessed John Locke? Where are you getting that from? I think that the smoke monster is the “Eater of the Souls”…it consumes those who have been judged by Anubis (aka Jacob). Therefore Jacob is in control of the smoke monster. And those that are judged in a positive light may progress to the Otherworld. Basic Egyptian mythology, also shown in the under ground (the hieroglyphics) temple where Ben is called for judgement. The person/thing that is now in John is Anubis/Jacob’s brother, Osiris, I think. The brother that tries to kill Anubis at least three times….
Yes.
The problem I have with Smokey being 100% against Jacob is that the monster never attacks Richard or his people who profess loyalty to Jacob. If Smokey hates Jacob, why not take out his team? In fact, it appears Smokey was used by Ben who was working for Jacob. Why would Smokey help Jacob’s ‘leader’?
Can someone explain the fault in my logic?
Smokey works for or IS Jacob. I agree, though, it was the other guy John saw. (Vanity. Gotta’ be my favorite sin.)
Rival is the smoke monster. He has not attacked and killed everyone because he has no reason too.
He only wants to kill Jacob.
If he kills everyone, who is he the leader of? himself? And then how can he use these people (Locke & Ben) to kill Jacob, if they are all dead.
He has a plan and its not genocide! its murder!
Smokey also wants everyone to live in fear of him, he does not work for Ben, he is summoned and decides to come or not.
He probably came when called by Ben because Ben and Locke were in trouble and he needed them both to execute the plan.
Did I miss something?
Terribly confused…
When did we find out that Smokey definitely took the form of other people…or is that just a theory…because it’s being said like it’s fact…Anyone want to point me in the right direction as to where this was confirmed?
The writers confirmed that when Yemi appeared to Ecko it was in fact the smoke monster taking on the form of Yemi. The monster also did it when Ben gets judged and Alex appears
People, why oh why do you bealive that the guy in the black shirt is the smokey? I have to admit that I thought of that myself at the beginning, but do not say it a a fact, it’s purely theory, and in my opinion posibily wrong.
This guy is just the antagonist of Jacob, not smokey neccesarily. We do not know who he is, he could just be any guy that opposes to Jacob’s thought that he is wrong about something. In my opinion he is trying to prove (Jacob) that people have free will, and that by pushing them in the right direction, they can truly CHOOSE RIGHT from wrong. Not as the black shirt guy thinks, he thinks they all choose at the end to destroy/ wrong choices.
