Gods

Written on 14th May 2009

Perhaps not so much of a new revelation but some support of previous ‘God-like’ theories.

I believe Jacob is God and the character at the beginning of the show with Jacob was the devil. Some considerations to support this:

1. Jacob begins the show fishing. The fish is an age old symbol for God. The symbol is used again when Locke goes to ask Ben a question and Ben anticipates his question by answering “I’m a Pisces”. Pisces, the fish, may be a symbolic reference again to God. Note that the dark side of the Pisces astrological sign is described as “Escapist and idealistic, Secretive and vague
Weak-willed and easily led”, certainly an apt description of Ben.

2. When Locke and Ben enter the chamber and find Jacob, he makes a reference to “Like it? I made it…”. He refers to a tapestry with subjects beneath rays radiating from a single point…. The power of God?

3. Jacob turns up throughout the other characters childhood years, not to manipulate them but to comfort and protect them. He pays for Kate’s lunchbox encouraging her not to steal again, he comforts Sawyer, he seemingly breaths life back into Locke and encourages Jack. Had Jacob been a sinister figure he would surely have gone back to manipulate the characters for his own purposes which he doesn’t.

4. I agree that various ‘dead’ characters (Christian, Locke, etc…) have all played key roles throughout the show influencing the show’s main characters. This would be exactly the kind of work the Devil would do. Did these characters sell their souls to the devil only to be forced to do ‘his’ work?

5. In mythology Gods cannot kill one another, only mortals can kills Gods which explains why the Devil is so keen to find a patsy to do ‘his’ work. He has influenced Ben throughout, through Locke, Alex, etc… all dead characters. And Locke himself as influenced and led by Christian, another dead character.

6. Jacob resides beneath a statue of the Goddess of fertility, fertility of course is a fundamental principle of the bible as procreation is one of the most important duties of human beings according to God. By destroying the statue, and making it impossible for women to bare children, the devil can destroy mankind.

7. Ben takes Locke to see Jacob in the cabin. Jacob of course isn’t in the cabin, only Christian who claims to speak on behalf of Jacob. Christian is also with Claire in the cabin (both dead characters). The cabin is surrounded by ash. Likely Jacob was never in the cabin, instead the devil was trapped there, released when the ash circle was broken, allowing the devil through Christian, Claire, Locke and others to move freely around the island and influence the ‘losties’.

8. The pocket of energy that the Dharma Initiative is about to drill into is deep down under ground. During these early years (the 1970’s) there is little evil work going on. In fact life is pretty good for both the Dharmas and the others, despite both being at odds, though living with a peace treaty. Interesting that the powerful pocket of energy could be a reference to hell itself.

It is mentioned repeatedly that once the Dharma folks released the energy, they then had to contain it again through the underground chamber that Desmond worked in, pressing the button continually to keep the power contained. When Desmond doesn’t press the button however, the power is again unleashed. Could this be the releasing of the powers of hell?

With the powers of hell unleashed, the devil is able to surface again and manipulate the humans to ultimately kill Jacob.

9. The key characters whenever they are shown to be evil seem to continually appear in black. The good characters seem to always appear in white or light colors when doing good. Locke, when he introduces himself on the beach in 1997 is wearing a dark cloak. Daniel’s Mother is wearing a dark hooded cloak in the church when Ben meets her. Ben is wearing black after leaving the island ande getting Sayid to kill for him. (Sayid also wears black). Even Sun wears black when she goes to the wharf intent on killing Locke. The character talking to Jacob at the start of the show is wearing black where Jacob is dressed in white or light colors.

10. Jacob visits Llana in the hospital and asks her to help him. She and Alpert are obviously angels or disciples of Jacob. Alpert even admits to Jacob giving him immortality. That would be an honour bestowed on a saint or angel by God.

Anyway, just thoughts. Man I hate having to wait for season 6!!!
