All dead
Probably been posted before, but has anybody else noticed that any time Smokey or MIB or whoever “shape-shiftes”, it (or he/her) always takes the form of someone who is dead?
And does anybody think that when Hugo “sees” his group of friends, like Charlie or Anna Lucia or Libby, that this could also be the “shape-shifter”?
Feel free to rip this apart.

Thats true…though I dont know about Hugo. He sees dead people and i’m sure there’s a good reason for it but I dont think Smokey appears as them outside the island
The smoke monster manifested as Walt, who is not dead.
Good call Linus, I forgot about that
How do we really know walt isn’t dead? Maybe hes really the bad guy. He is the man in black reincarnate and actually died at some point? Like maybe thats why the lady asked “if walts ever been anywhere he wasn’t suppose to be?”
Oh, that’s right, I forgot about Walt. Good call. Although surago636 has a point, we really can’t say whether Walt’s dead or alive… oh well. Just one more thing to ponder. 🙂
Dharma Dancer, Walt looked pretty alive to me! And, if Walt was the smoke monster, why did he help Locke when he was in the pit? Sorry, it doesn’t make much sense to me.
I do not believe that the smoke monster and Jacob’s Nemesis have anything in common at all.
Jacob has ruled Richard and ‘the others’ for a very long time, and not once has the smoke monster ever attacked any of them! If this was Jacob’s Nemesis, why was Ben able to summon it for help?
The smoke monster has only attacked those that were NOT ‘others’.
A point worth noting!
You know, you bring up a good point, dabs. Most of us have just sort of accepted the smoke monster as being one and the same as MIB, and we, myself included, have not been looking at it as the simple theory it really is.
However, I do believe that Smokey has something to do with either Jacob or MIB, or is one of them themselves.
*sigh* It’s going to be a long wait ’till next season. I really can’t wait! 🙂
definitely agree dabs, there just isn’t enough evidence to link smokey and MIB. I’ve been trying to figure out how or what any connection might be and there seems to be a few different ‘sightings’ situations. We know that the smoke monster took the form of Alex and Yemi (we saw it transform). Christian seems to just appear and disappear all over the place (on the island, America, the freighter), Walt is the only ‘sighting’ of someone not dead and Hurley’s visits by his friends. Christian seems to be very much directing people – leading Jack to the caves, instructing Locke on how to leave the island, telling Michael he can die now, directing Sun to look for Jin. I just can’t link all of this together, especially when you throw in the security system role of the smoke monster, as dabs said, the others don’t seem to be in danger and Ben has some control over it rather than it being a completely autonomous ‘being’. Don’t know if anyone else is struggling with this?
while watching an episode from season 1, where jack keeps seeing christian all over the island, he finds christian’s coffin. in it, there is no body. However, in the season 5 finale, there locke’s body is intact and heavily guarded too (by ilana and the others). A lot of people have assumed that fake locke and christian are both smokey. but i think christian’s missing body vs john’s body being there is a hint we should think about. This is just something i noticed, but i dont know what it means. Any ideas?
Christian could have been thrown from the coffin when it flew from the plane – it was already open when Jack looked inside (right?). Or it really could be living Christian who for some reason finds it humerous to scare the hell out of everybody on the island (and off). Maybe Christian has a “gift”, like what Richard has only Christian’s gift is that he can’t die. Or maybe he’s a ghost. Maybe he is Smokey. Maybe he’s MIB. Who knows, he might even Desmonds second cousin once removed for all we know. 🙂
But anyway, lost girl, I think you may have stumbled upon important info or a hole in the script. Good thinking.
