Why did Smokie kill Seth?

In ‘the Pilot’, the pilot is killed by Smokie. If Smokie is a judge and Seth is such a darned nice guy (m. highschool sweetie & never took off his ring), how come Smokie offed him and left him dangling in a tree? What did Seth do to result in the legacy nursery rhyme, “Monster eats the Pilot”? Why? Why? Why? Was he a threat?

Think about it … he didn’t kill everyone, just a select few – lots of people were left, not just the main losties (though most did later sucumb to Frogert Flambe). Is this the ‘security system’ – were they not a threat or useful … but the pilot … ? [Along these lines, Ben wasn’t let live ‘cuz he was forgiven, but because what he did and would do were not a danger to the island … or useful as part of ‘the plan’.]

  1. I think it was more something to make The Pilot episode more exciting.

One of the things that got me hooked on Lost was the fact that the island was mysterious, and the smoke monster in the first episode was a clincher in that sense.

Also, don’t forget that it was Jack who was supposed to be eaten by Smokey, not the Pilot, so I think it was definately something to gain viewers curiosity 🙂

  2. I think it’s as simple as the writers didn’t know where they were going with the whole smoke-monster thing at the time, and so in retrospect it doesn’t fit in.

  3. I agree with emzi. It was something to peak the viewers interest from the start. And it definitely worked. Although the writers are more than clever enough to make it all make sense, I don’t feel it will be a significant part of any story.

  4. maybe as the pilot was not actually supposed to be on the plane in the first place (wasn’t the helicopter pilot -frank?- from season 4 supposed to be flying it), he wasnt needed and so got “offed” ?

  5. I agree with helentink. Since Frank was supposed to be the pilot maybe the guy that took his place was just a “mistake” so he was taken care of.
