Painting in Widmore’s Office

So, I’m rewatching jughead, and was wondering if anyone else caught the painting in Widmore’s office. It is visible when desmond bargs in to talk to him. The word Namaste is clearly visible, and there appears to be a polar bear, the island, and an upside down statue (looks like a buddha statue). I didn’t know if this was discussed, and was curious about everyone’s thoughts.

  1. Jack Bender, who is the lead director for lost painted many of the pictures that are used as props on lost. Sometimes they get reused, as with a particular piece that is supposed to be painted by Aaron’s father, later seen in Widmore’s office. The writer’s have confirmed there is no further meaning to them.

  2. Yeah, there is a much better view of it in season 3 flashes before your eyes 15:17 (close-up at 15:20, it is a buddha or tibeten monk which might go back to richard alpert – google his name) however it is a reverse image. (it is also on the opposite side of the room now, to desmonds right where as in jughead it was to his left.

Interestingly enough at 17:12 it appears on his left again.

At first i wondered if he was looking in a mirror, but then wouldn’t we see his reflection also? Also notice, when Whidmore goes to get the whiskey that now directly to Desmonds right is the bar…but no painting???

even more interesting is in season 1 raised by another at 6:22… one of claires boyfriends painting, the one with the face and the number 125 on it is seen in the background. This same painting is seen in Whidmores office again in flashes before your eyes at 15:22 behind and to desmonds right. The funny thing is… This point in time is years before the claire and her boyfriend scene. I find that a lot more interesting than anything.

anyways good find on the polar bear painting i had not thought much until you mentioned it and then when i went to look i noticed all the other stuff, at least besides claires boyfriends painting, that was pointed to me by the character connection page which can be found here:
http://lostpedia.wikia.com/wiki/Character_connections (although it took me a while to figure out which painting it was, i was looking for the darn polar bear painting at first)

not sure what to make of it. maybe the writers switched the painting from side to side and reversed it just to make us take a closer look at it.

  3. speaking of paintings, did you notice the painting of the dog in the cabin during the last episode of season 5 when Ilanna goes in, right before they torch the place.

It doesn’t look like Vincent, but i do think its odd.

  4. My wife wonders if Whidmore paid claire’s boyfriend to leave her setting up the events that would bring her to the island.
It seems he bought a painting…

  5. I have noticed the painting of the dog more then once actually.

I like the idea about Claire’s boyfriend of course it is possible. Was the painting in Widmore’s office shown in a previous episode?

  6. Yes, the painting was shown in season 1 raised by another, at 6:22, i left a comment talking all about it but it is not showing… it only shows to me when i log on but based on your question I am assuming you are not seeing it.

however, it is not the polar painting but the painting in the background with the number 125 on it.

notice how the polar bear painting switches sides tho? the one you are talking about.

  7. it is a buddha not a tibetan monk, but check this out: its upside down…

On a very basic level all beings think that they should be happy. When life becomes difficult or painful, we feel that something has gone wrong. This wouldn

  8. and…
In this very lifetime we can do ourselves and this planet a great favor and turn this very old way of thinking upside down. As Shantideva, author of Guide to the Bodhisattva

  9. The painting in his office is reversed in “Flashes before your eyes” because they seem to have reversed the whole shot.

In the opening shot http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/1953/officej.jpg you can see there’s no picture there, and Desmond is sitting in the right-hand chair.

But less than a second later http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/9058/paintingreverse.jpg Desmond is sitting in the left-hand chair, and the painting is over his right shoulder, and reversed.

It just looks like, for some reason, the powers that be horizontally flipped some of the shots, but left others untouched.
