Smokie can only kill non-candidates

Let’s go through the list of people killed by smokie:

Eko, the pilot (seth norris i think), the mercenaries, Jacob’s bodyguards and I’m assuming Rousseau’s team.

None of those people were candidates. Candidates who have died have died for other reasons.

Maybe this is one of the rules the little boy was talking about to Flocke. “you can’t kill him” because he is a candidate.

I rarely get into tv shows, but as you know lost is something else. I am a daytime, weekday theorist. I usually don't check in on weekends or nights. Helps me get through the workday. favorite characters: eko (duh), desmond, miles, sayid.

  1. Yeah, I agree… This makes me think of Charles Widmore. Ben can’t kill him. Does that mean he’s a candidate? Maybe he knows he’s a candidate and that’s the real reason he wants to get back to the island… he wants a shot at becoming the next Jacob.

  2. what still gets me though is how he can be summoned. and how he hangs out under the temple… im trying to put together a comprehensive theory on him…

  3. I agree that he can’t kill candidates. And based on Ilana’s statement that he was out ‘recruiting’ that shows that he has different intentions. I do think people are expendable to him, so if someone (like the mercenaries) no longer have a purpose that will get him what he wants, then they can or will be killed.

eko, I was thinking about the summoning thing, too. Given that I don’t trust the spinster that Smocke is, I doubt he cares about people’s lives as much as he is acting like he does.

I also think that Ben risked summoning the monster, and because Ben would ultimately be a major part of Smocke’s plan, then he/it responded. It gave Ben a false sense of power and control. And in the process, Smokey was able to eliminate people that could have been used to fight against him. I tend to think that he would much rather have people afraid, isolated and hopeless and at the very least, eliminate possible alliances against his plan and for Jacob’s plans.

  4. but if richard is right and smokie wants everyone dead, then killing the mercenaries would seem to be a contradiction to that purpose.

and in the early seasons he seems to patrol the area around the temple. AND he gets stared down by Eko.

i always wonder what would have happened with eko if the actor didn’t leave the show. he was supposed to be central.

  5. I thought the reason Ben couldn’t kill Widmore was because they were both Others. Others can’t kill each other, which is also why Juliet got marked. Richard said Ben was turned an other when he was healed in the pool and Widmore, well he was the Others leader.

I wonder about Smokey’s purpose of scanning people. What is he looking for? Their being touched by Jacob in the past? I agree that Smokey can’t kill candidates, or can’t kill them until they’ve proven themselves unworthy by free will.

  6. i like the idea of scanning to see if they have been touched by jacob. i believe it is that and finding their weak and guilty points to see if they can be manipulated.

  7. Hey eko, I guess I’m not taking what Richard says as 100% truth either….

I think with the mercenaries, they were after Ben. They were trying to get Ben off the island, and ultimately Smokey needed Ben for his plans, so the mercenaries were expendable.

With Rousseau’s team, I keep thinking how he said it was “it’s like a security system…”

Protecting what? Just a physical location or place? Or his plans?

  8. yes, its always tough to know who to trust on lost.

and if he is a security system, its strange that the dharma initiative has a security system (the fence) for the security system.

  9. could be to richard as well. remember the boy first appears when he is trying to entice richard, and then he changes his tune and lets him leave.

i’m not sure who the boy is referring to yet. we will see…

  10. Ahh but Ford is a valid canditate while Richard is not. I thought Jacob but why would he tell him he couldnt do something he already has done?

An Richard comes to Sawyer & tells him he wants to kill you so thats why I think that.

  11. I like the theory….

Smokie has never even TRIED to kill any of the candidates (it would seem). It sees Locke, then later tries taking him. It chases after Kate and Juliet but only appears to want to take flashes of them.

We can assume that if smokie wanted these people dead by now, it would’ve happened by now. So why do the temple others, as well as Smokie, all want the candidates alive right now if they’re on separate sides?

Also, Widmore might be after the island’s super-duper magic healing water. He seems to want to exploit the island. If you think about it, if you can control healing water, you might be able to control the world. That’s some pretty serious shit.

  12. I’ve always wondered (since we are talking in circles here) about how did the DI KNOW how to keep Smokey out with a sonic wave fence? How did they know his “weaknesses” ? That’s another subject at another time but I’m still very curious as to how they knew how to keep him out, unless there were some ancient scrolls of sorts left behind by other inhabitants of the island yrs ago & they found them & followed *directions* as it were. I don’t know, just speculating!

  13. And Chiefof16 …you’re right! That DOES make alot of sense as to why Widmore would want to exploit the island. Since he was leader of The Others at one time, I’m sure he obviously knew about the Healing Spring inside the Temple. Another thing that’s right is Smokey hasn’t killed any candidates BUT remember the season 1 finale Exodus Pt 2, where Locke gets drug into the hole by Smokey but doesnt kill him, I found that very strange. Maybe it was a warning

  14. Maybe Smokey recognized Locke as the one survivor who he could most easily bend to his will and eventually take on in body? He was the one who didn’t want to leave and trusted the Island.

  15. Well, two of the living candidates who have been relieved of duty are Miles and Lapidus, right? Juliet appears to have been crossed out too, before she died.

Miles used his island gifts for personal gain. Not exactly akin to the Island’s agenda.

Lapidus knew that Widmore’s plan was a hoax- thus he went against the desire of the island not to be found.

Juliet killed Others. Others are the Island’s special people.

When Locke wasn’t doing as he was “told” by the Island, he began to lose his Island gift- and perhaps his candidacy?

So you can lose your candidacy if you move against the wishes of the Island- or at least the wishes of the island as represented by Jacob.

    Maybe?
