MIB might not be the smoke monster after all

I was thinking about this when MIB was in the temple with Ben and the smoke monster killed all those men.  MIB runs behind a pilliar,  then the smoke monster attacks the armed men in the temple. We never actually see him transform, which leads me to believe that MIB and the smoke monster are two different entities. The thing that contradicts this however would be the scene when the smoke monster is going through the jungle and the camera is showing you what the smoke monster sees. Then the camera switches to MIB picking up the machete in the jungle. But again you don’t see him physically transform. Perhaps the smoke monster might just be some kind of transportation?
