See you in this life, Brother

Written 22nd March

We all know this week’s episode is the long-awaited back story of Richard Alpert (and I am stoked for this, btw). Well the digital cable guide description for this episode is simply, “Richard Alpert faces a difficult decision.” This got me to thinking…

It has now been confirmed that as most of us have speculated for some time, Richard indeed arrived on the island via The Black Rock. His role on the ship was a little more debated, but I think it was made clear by the way he picked them up and stared at them, that he was in the shackles. My guess is that he had family and/or a loved one or ones with him. After arriving on the island he was offered their freedom – or lives – in exchange for his eternal loyalty and dedication to Jacob and his cause (much like Dogan). Obviously we know what choice he made.

Flashforward if you will, to the present. Another ship – Widmore’s sub – has arrived. Presumably, it too was “brought there by Jacob.” My guess would be that inside the mysterious locked door is Desmond, and chances are Penelope and/or Lil Charlie are with him. He will ultimately be given the same choice, and I think he will make the same decision as Richard.

Taking it a step further, I am in the camp who believes Jack will be taking over for Jacob. If this theory proves correct, Desmond will be his “Richard” – bringing even more meaning to their chance meeting in the stadium years ago. They will truly be seeing each other “in another life.”

Whatcha think?

  1. I guess you were partly right and partly wrong. Richard was brought to the island as a slave and he was led to believe that he could have his wife back, not by Jacob but by MIB.

I’m somewhat confused about Jacob’s deal with Dogen. It was a strange deal. And why didn’t Richard get the same deal?
